The ESEE 4 clip point looks like a winner. I should order it soon after I deposit my check. Any reson not to get this model?

For me, I would go for the normal version. However, you really can't go wrong with any ESEE knife.

It is gong to be a protection knife as well. So I would like to have the clip point, but why would you go with the normal version?

Make sure to check your local laws. This is a true double edged blade and thus is illegal in many areas of the US.

Depends on your intended use. For a dedicated defensive tool, the clip point is the way to go (where legal), but if you plan on using it more for utility type tasks or outdoors use, the regular version is going to be your winner.

The tip is going to be less robust on the clip point, batoning is going to be harder, choking up on the blade for more delicate tasks would be a hazard......

I'm sure in a defensive situation the regular version will stab just fine. And should you need it for more utility purposes it'll perform much better. But honestly, when you need it, any knife will do what you need it to do.

It's a tool.

I'd go with the regular version myself.

I bought the ESEE-3MIL-CP specifically for the outdoors. I think it will work much better than the standard version. I'd say a BIG  for the ESEE-4. In fact, I'm having a hard time talking myself out of getting a second CP, in the -4. Laws be damned. The fixed blade will get me in to see a judge. The -CP is just icing.

If its for self defense I would get the clip point, just to have the ability to do a backhand slash. Never having been in a life or death situation I can't really tell you whether or not its useful. Like anything else, your best defense is to avoid the situation and stay far from trouble.

On a side note, Canada of all places has no restrictions on double edged knives.

I was going to say check laws but I saw you live in AZ. If I couldnt live in TX, I'd live in AZ. SOme of the best knife and gun laws in the country. And I hope yall kick the big B.O. illegal immigration's ass. But not to get political... :)
