. . . on getting a Helle Odel as a 4", all-purpose fixed blade. Helle has a good rep, it's a beautiful looking tool, and I have been curious about trying a Scandi-style blade.

But then, I started looking at Bark Rivers again. The same thing happened when I was considering the Russell Woodswalker and bought a Mini Canadian (no regrets).

I have been noticing the BRK&T Highland Special on sale here and there for less than $100 when dressed in plain micarta, and now I'm becoming totally OCD about it.

Which of these would you choose (or which others)?

Check out our own BladeForums survival knife. I perfer the Ironwolf scandi myself :D

I know your looking for a chice between the 2 you selected but I must say I can't recomend the fallkniven f-1 enough. It's everything I've looked for in a fixed blade. That being said the helle is nice as the scandi grind is friendly to sharpen...however like most scandi knives I believe it is not full tang. where as the bark river is. If I had to choose between the 2 I'd prbably go with the barkie. if I had to choose any barkie I'd probably go with a northstar. but that's just me....isn't the shopping the best part though!

I thought about the Falkniven awhile back, but rejected it on the grounds that I wanted to find something cheaper . . . but I'm back up into that price range with BR and the Helle I like is pretty close too, so I guess the F1 is back in the hunt. Oh God. Somebody stop me.

i have bothe the mini-canadian and the highland.. both great all around users... :D

be careful with those barkies....;) they get pretty addicting... i have #10 on the way....:o

Don't forget to check out the forum knives ;)

Edit: Seconding Myakka. You've got a choice of three different styles at great prices!

If you want to try a scandi style blade, spend $10 on a Swedish Army Knife.
Then you'll get some scandixperience and be able to make a better informed decision when you are ready to drop 10X that amount.

Normark sells them with his killer kydex for just a little more ;)

The "Swedish Army Knife" will expose you to a very thin "Scandi" ground knife. A significantly thicker blade, such as the F-1 ground to a "Scandi" or "zero bevel" form, would not necessarily perform the same.

The Helle Odel is significantly thicker than the SwAK?

Ragnar says the SWK is .079" thick. My Odel is a hair over .125" thick (just mic'd it). The factory spec for the Odel is .114" per Ragnar.
