I thought I had found the perfect replaceable-blade razor knife, but. . .

I bought this Gerber "superknife" at Walmart, the kind where you can replace the disposable razor blade. It's made by Gerber, so I thought it'd be good quality. At first I thought it was the perfect slim, attractive replacement for my klunky old Husky brand one that I got at Home Depot.

Well, after a little while I came to realize that the design execution is poor.

You know the kind of blade it uses -- those trapezoidal ones with two notches in the top. Well, when the blade is fitted in properly, and the knife is closed, the tip of the blade makes contact with the spacer inside the knife!

This pisses me off. I know that it cost only about $10, but why couldn't it be designed so that closing the thing doesn't ruin the edge itself?!

Anyone else have this thing and know what I'm talking about?

The QC on those are sketchy at best. I had a perfect one that I lost then bought 2 more. One was good the other didn't hold onto the blade securely. I've never seen the blade hit the spacer though.

Once very true, today unfortunately not true at all.

In fact, except for a very few specific models that parent company
Fiskars still makes in the USA, Gerber has become a brand to avoid.

Still use my clunky Klein Tools boxcutter knife.
Solid as all-get-out and works great every time.

(Made in Illinois BTW.)

This Gerber one kinda reminded me of a gentleman's folder, like my Buck Gent (which I've had for almost 20 years). I am sorely disappointed. I rather liked the idea of having a great, comely razor blade as an EDC that could be used for so many things without a worry that I would beat it up or it would have to be sharpened.

There is actually one of pretty decent quality; A.G. Russell sells it.

It's the "original". http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_maker/s_through_z/superknife/superknife_sk2_silver.html

I have a couple of those Gerbers, and don't have the problem described on either of them. On the other hand, I usually have to sharpen those utility knife blades before I can stand to use them.

On a somewhat related note, I recently picked up a Camillus branded folding utility knife with what looks like an Axis lock, thumbscrew blade change, storage for spare blades in the butt and a pocket clip with Blackie Collins' name on it. Anyone else seen these?

This is very true. GERBER's "crap" is mostly made foreign, which doesn;t bother me at all since I avoid their products like the plague. Stick with Made in the USA stuff and, when you get a knife or other product that's not up to snuff, whcih of course will happen, you'll have a valid reason to complain. Bitching about GERBER's quality control is futile.

By the way, Home Depot sells their GERBER razor knife for $6...saw it yesterday and didn;t think twice...... I left it there where it belongs.
