I recently got my hands on a Victorinox Mechanic.
It looked terrible; none of the blades would open; scales were coated in some kind of goo.
However I found the toothpick and tweezers were in immaculate condition so that told me there was some life left in this SAK.
A short while later I have the majority of the gunk cleaned out of it and I'm stuck with this Mechanic with a grungy film all over it. It was a thick, waxlike film... kind of translucent gray. I thought it might be oil at first but now I doubt it.
I tried all my usual knife care stuff. Nothing worked.
I was at my sink and just happened to spy Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner... you know the stuff that fizzes up like mad?
What the hell? I sprayed the knife down.
Not only did it take the film away, it revealed the blades to be free of scratches with a mirror shine. And it was factory sharp too once all that gunk was off of it.
I wonder what on earth was on that knife that I couldn't polish it off but a household cleaner powered right through it. Any ideas?
The only two things wrong with it seem to be that the backspring for the can opener and the reamer are still so stiff those implements are very difficult to open. When the lock open they almost literally lock open, and they don't like to be opened in the first place. I have to use a coin or something else to open them lest I tear my fingernails up. Everything else seems to be okay. It looks like a knife someone carried in their pocket for 3-4 years but never once opened. My conclusion is that it wasn't a badly neglected knife, just a dirty one.
