....just a tad.

Does anyone else have this problem?:
-I have to have a small choil(?) where the blade adjoins the hilt. I just can;t stand having the last 1/8" of blade not being sharpened like the rest because it's too close to the hilt.

I modified my BRKT Highland this way too. Here's the Northstar:

I started with a tiny triangular file to get the notch at the right distance from hilt....

Then I used a dremel-type tool with a conical stone....

I finished off emery cloth, 1000 wet/dry, and finally red rouge on the grinder (muslim wheel).

Anybody else doing this?

Muslin.
Muslims want to kill you.
Nice, clean job on the choil.

Thanks for the compliments and support guys! Bill, it's because the Muslins want to kill us that I misuse the term! ((( :D )))

Stretch, to answer your question, yes, I did the same thing to my BRKT Highland and a few other blades as well, for the same reason. I guess they don't call us knifenuts for nothing. Actually, I don't think I own a knife that hasn't been tweaked in some fashion, that's half the fun.

I have done it to all my folders, not to my fixed blades though (not sure why now that I think about it) I used the chainsaw sharpening attachment for the Dremel. Takes about, oh I don't know, 10 sec. or so.

I probably should get a real Dremel - maybe for Christmas. Hey Mama! Did you hear that???

I used a small, conical rotary stone. From you fellows that've done it, what would you recommend besides that? And....what's the chainsaw attachment (a sharpening file for chainsaws?)?

The chainsaw sharpening attachment, well it is just a bit. It is a small, cylindrical grinding bit for the Dremel (the bit is also made by Dremel, got it at Homedepot) and it comes in pairs: one is a little coarser than the other. Both are pretty coarse, so it doesn't really matter which you use. You can use any cylindrical grinding bit, but the ones that are sold as chainsaw sharpening devices were just the right size. Also, they seem to last a little bit better than the usual Dremel grinding bits. I didn't use a "real" dremel either. I have a holesaw that takes the same size bits.

I think that I'd be more prone to mod the hilt such that it is no longer in the way and, thus, not loose the last bit of edge that I would loose to unsharpness or choil formation. But, it does look factory.

Muslims don't want to kill you (impresonal), welll they may want to kill YOU (familiar) but they don't necessarily want to kill the rest of us. Although, this is a discussion better suited for the political forum or whine and cheese.

I do like those barkies.
