Anyone who's been around W&SS for any amount of time knows when Doc Canada speaks, you listen. When I started foraging for wild edibles, he contacted me with a wealth of sources and information. A while back he recomended I try a Japanese Hori Hori knife. I finally got around to picking one up.

It's basically a gardening knife, with a serrated edge and a straight edge, and a slight trowel-like shape to the blade. I can already see how this will be GREAT for digging. :)

There is a noticeable gap here between the tang and the wooden handle. I'm not sure if this concerns me or not. I suppose I could always fill it in if I get too paranoid about perfection.

Thanks for the heads-up Doc!

Let us know how it works, and if you wish the handle was better. I've looked around, and I've found no "better" quality than the one you got.
Not that a Custom forged hori hori is necessary, or is it?

Zenbori Soil Knife. I have one. It's awesome.

This model is the most Japanese local use foraging wild eible plant, but the shape of the knife looks like double bevel fighting knife (dagger ) recently police try to ban it and cause a lot of bad reaction

Actually, I can't take the credit, John. The Hora Hora was recommended to me by my buddy Phil. Most recently I used it to harvest the Leeks that were shown in my post. The ground there is very rocky and the Hora Hora performed like a champ.

I've also used it in areas where there are a lot of tree roots and the saw tooth edge is very effective. The blade is stout enough that there is no worry when prying up a plant from the ground.

Oh, and John, I wouldn't worry about the gap in the handle. :D

Here is mine:

After work, tonight, I tried to get in a quickee hike up and down a few hills - trying to get back in some semblance of shape but found the trail washed out by recent rains (40 days, and 40 nights, or so it seems - and it's not over yet :( )

So I only managed to get a couple of plant pictures.

This one, Wild Strawberry - the flower is so white that it drowned out the rest of the picture, so I had to darken it up to see it better.

The other one, even worse :( .

WOW, A sharpened trowel-knife. Now this is a (backpacking) trowel I can respect.

Someone post a link to where they are available for sale!

Google Shopping is your friend. :D

I highly recommend the Zenbori Soil Knife, but if you want a wooden handled one just search for a hori hori.
