I Tried Something Different

I recently purchased an Arclite in D-2 from A.G.Russell. I wanted to try something different with it and have some fun at the same time. Here's what I came up with. First I sent it out to have Boron Carbide coated by Bodycote. These are the same folks who do the work for all the major makers. Next I wanted a distinctive handle, so I wrapped it in an under coating of Black 550 Paracord. Next I applied Alligator scales to the handle, also in black. I wanted to do a traditional Japanese flat cord wrap over the alligator. I found detailed instructions on how to do this, but I figured that I would have to go to Japan and study under a master for a couple of months to get it right. I didn't have that much time, so I just sort of "winged it". It didn't come out half-bad IMHO. I was hoping to attach a photo of it, but as a basic member, I don't seem to have that ability. If anyone(especially if you are of a higher status) is interested, I can e-mail you a photo, and maybe you can attach or post it. Between the D-2 Steel and the Boron Carbide coating I think I have a knife that will stand up against anything I throw at it. I realize that the handle isn't very practical, but it was fun to do. After a while, I'll probably take it apart, and do it in a style more like a Strider. Let me know if anyone would like to see it. Thanks.

That sounds cool Ken. If you have an outside photo-hosting service, you can put a link to it here and it will show the picture. Otherwise, email it to me and I'll see what I can do about putting it up...It's always nice to see what people have done to make a knife more "theirs."

edited because I can't read

That does look good. You'll probably get quite a few people that would like for you to modify their arclite.

Nice job on that knife. I thought the Boron Carbide coating would make it look black. Maybe I'm revealing my ignorance here. It sure isn't black in the picture. Just maybe slightly tinted gray. Or is there a choice of colors?

Thanks.

Boron Carbide produces a "Clear Black Coat". It sounds more confusing than it is. It is very difficult to capture the subtle changes in a photo. I sould have taken "before" pictures to make the comparison. Even though in person, the knife looks quite a bit darker than the original, everything shows through the coating. Boron Carbide will not cover up scratches, grind lines or obviously writing on the blade. I also sent in a MT UDT 2000 that I mirror polished, and a Brend/Boker that I two-tone polished. You have to open my attachments in each post at the end of the thread.
Thanks for the compliments. I enjoy personalizing my knives.
