Now that i have your attn. im sure this topic has been beaten into the ground so bear with me
I want to know your opinions on a fixed blade that can be treated awfull i mean the kinda awfull that lets it sit covered in blood/goo at the hunting camp for months i want to use it to cut fire wood i want the kind of knife my grandkid could find 50 years from now underneath the deck covered in years of mud and simply wash off touchup the edge and start useing all over again. (i do not treat my tools this poorly but i just wanted you all to know what i was getting at when i said tough) also lets forget about how much it would cost or wether or not its a custom but it needs to be Blade lenght at least 5" and a comfortable handle. thanks ahead of time

Something made by one of the ABS journeyman or mastersmiths immediately comes to mind ;)

...except they tend not to forge stainless. I would tend to check into Busse, Strider, or the Chris Reeve One Piece Line. I own several Busses and a Strider AD, and the quality and toughness are second to none. I've heard very good things about the Reeve One Pieces as well. You might want to check out Cliff Stamp's reviews of Busse and Strider blades:

Whew... I thought we would have to move this thread to W&C and let the kiddies go at it. :D

Good suggestions by all so far I would have a tendancy to go with what Para said and add Dozier and Simonich to the list.

Nero,
If you really "want the kind of knife my grandkid could find 50 years from now underneath the deck covered in years of mud and simply wash off touchup the edge and start useing all over again", then you only have a couple of choices; either a custom blade made from stellite or talonite, or a Beta Ti knife from Mission Knife & Tool.

Both of these are capable of surviving exactly what you've described above completely unscathed. Neither, however, really represents the ultimate choice for extended sessions of firewood chopping.

Barry Dawson pops into my mind. Been making Stryder-style blades out of differentially heat treated 440C for 30 years or so. Very tough, take a great edge, very stain resistant.

BUSSE.

Even if the knife your grandkid found was rusted beyond repair, and FUBAR so to speak, the Busse guarantee says it will be repaired! From what I understand, all *unintentional* damage will be repaired (or replaced). A busse knife might not even need repairs after harsh treatment!

With a guarantee like that, your grandchildren will be covered. Besides, Busse Combat makes some of the toughest damned knives ever! If you get one and use it, you will be a true believer. INFI is some tough stuff for sure.

:D
