I wanna buy a Benchmade...

I am a big fan of the 942. Great knife. Mine has done everything I have asked of if for the last year and a half.

there's a ton of choices...Give us more info on what you want.

Let's see the 705, 735, 940, 770, 550.... See what I mean that's jsut a few!

What I want is something I can use everyday...but not that big. I'll check out all of those to see which one I like!

Buy the right one? :)

Beyond "benchmade / mid-sized", what exactly are you looking for?

Midsize meaning...? 3"? 4"?

What will you be using it for?

How much are you willing to spend?

The mini-Griptinianses are one of my favorite series of knives. They are tough and cut well, and offer terriffic "bang for the buck".

I carried my BM 555 for a whole year before moving to a 710 and it never once let me down. I like the blade shape of the 555 more than the one of the 556, but whichever you choose it will be a teriffic workhorse. There have been several recent discussions of the Griptilian series on the forums, check the main forum and KR&T from about a week ago and you should find them.

Overall the Griptilians are great, and definately an ideal start into Benchmade's product line.

You may want to reconsider the serrations though. Everybody has a different opinion on this, but I have always found half-serrated blades to offer the worst of both worlds.

whatever you do.. hold it in your hand and play with it at least a little but before you buy... DO NOT BUY ON THE INTERNET! Unless it is from a person you know and/or respect...

I have tried to be convinced that straight edge is better. But my straight edge Spidey that I convinced myself to buy is boring. Folks like survivalist Doug Ritter say you need a plain blade knife because it is easier to sharpen in survival situations on stones...please...how many people wind up like Robinson Crusoe? I got the Griptilian in plain and half serrated and sent the plain one back. Afterall nature invented serrations...just look at the teeth of a Great White, serrated, baby.

There's nothing really wrong with buying over the internet. It's better to handle them in person, but.. if you can't...

I've bought site unseen lots of times. Sometimes I'm disappointed. If you get something you don't like, you can always return it, trade it, ebay it, or just plain sell it. Sometimes you'll take a small hit, but at least you have most your money back.

Umm.. the Tsek is ok. I think the griptillian is better.

Once again, do you have a specific purpose in mind?

Cause honestly, almost any benchmade is pretty good. You could carry any of them around everyday. Most of them are midsized...

We could help you narrow it down if you have a little more info.

the only thing I don't like about the Griptilian is the handels feel a little plasticy to me but they do give you a good grip. The 813 is okay but I think the Axis lock offers a better lockup and smoother action. I wouldn't consider a knife without the Axis ;)

I have to say the Mini-Griptilian is the way to go. I sent my son away to college with a PE one which he promptly lost. I just purchased two from Revolvergeek here on the forum. Both were used and had the combo edges. I will be giving the black one to my son and the purple I will keep. I really like the hole in the blade as I am a big Spyderco fan and the combo edge doesn't seem to bother me much. I just can't stand total serrated edge knives. It is all personal preference. I really like the way the Griptilians open and the lock. I think they are great EDC knives.

Have you considered a Microtech. A little more money, but in my opinion, better quality than a Benchmade. I have owned several Benchmades that had pretty poor fit and finish, and i have yet to see a Microtech with poor F&F. Just my opinion, but one shared my many.

Have to agree with Megalo there.. Microtech knives have amazing fit and finish. Benchmades offer a little more variety and excitement in their lines IMO tho, and still have great F&F.

It might be a good idea to swing by a store and handle each kind before you make a buying decision. I do have to say that the first time i held and opened a Microtech knife, it immediately instilled trust and the very very low tolerances were immediately evident.

Benchmades however did not quite have that same fit. But still great knives. I would definately recommend a Griptillian as a first benchmade.. i personally love FRN/Zytel as a handle material on an EDC. Maybe its from using an endura so much...

Nick,
Well I'm considering the Griptilian 551 is the way to go?
Yes, it’s certainly way to go!
I carry 551 as my EDC with urban jeans-n-polo attire for more than half year and I’m satisfied completely with its performance. This knife is big enough to do everything you could probably need. On the other hand it looks modestly and is less people scarring than it could be expected taking into consideration its dimensions. Also comfortable enough to carry it daily and handy enough to apply a lot of cutting force. It is not too expensive and you probably wouldn’t hesitate to put it into real-life cutting tasks.

Definitely it is one of the best buys all around.
