I bought him one of the Kershaw collaborations a while ago and he loves it. Nothing wrong with the Kershaws at all they are really decent for the price honestly. However I really want him to own and experience a real Emerson.

I want to get him either a CQC 7B or a Mini CQC 15. The 7 is an amazing knife and honestly until I owned one I never realized how great it was. Although I feel like the 15 has a little more cool factor with the recurve tanto blade. I've never owned or handled the 15 so I can't speak at all to how it feels in hand.

I'm leaning more towards the 7 right now, but what would you guys suggest I go with?

Both great choices. My only concern would be the grip of the 15 in regards to hand size. Some folks with larger paws might find it restricting. It's also very secure due to that design.

He has pretty small hands with kind of chubby short fingers. I doubt he would have trouble with any knife with a handle over 4 inches.

My fav is the mini-15. I have both Kershaws that you mentioned and I do like the Kershaw version of the CQC7. If you get the 7B, you have a choice of chisel ground (black G10 scales) or V-ground (tan G10 scales)... if the grind is any kind of concern to you. I know Rolf's advocating for the CQC7 and I'll second that if your dad likes tanto blades.

If he likes recurves, I'll say get him a Commander or mini-Commander. That has become my second fav Emerson... a very close second fav.

A very, very close second fav...

I have never held either 15. My current faves are the 7a the commander and the sheepdog. If he likes tanto maybe give the new mutant a look, depending what your budget is.

I recently just acquired my First Emerson a Rangemaster Sheepdog so I can only give you my opinion on it . It's exceeded my expectations , strong lock up , action is smooth as silk, good detent and feels like it was made for my hand .
I'm loving this knife !

I have been wondering about this knife, but I heard some people were having problems with them. Glad yours is solid. I think I like the Spear point blade shape better on this one.

Yeah I read the same thing but I liked it so much I thought I'd give it a try and really glad I did . This one is a good one the detent is strong, blade centering is great , no sticky lock bar"although first day it had a little stick to it but not bad at all" But now it's perfect after only a day of playing with it lol . Super smooth and fast action to I'm really loving it . I went with the Bowie because to me the spear point made the blade look smaller were as with the Bowie it looked bigger plus I personally like the shape . That's not to say I don't like the spear point because I might just have to get one of those also I like this one so much 👍🏻

Have you decided on anything yet? Since knifeworks is a supporting memeber get him a mini commander they have a satin partially serrated for 142. Must have had an overstock or something but that way you're not out 200 bucks

The 15 is a great knife, in full size or mini. I carried mine for about a year before I chNged to the ETAK-BT.
