I've looked at Bob Dozier his looked nice. Not as custom I guess. I really like Daniel Winkler -- his are my favorite (that are somewhat in my price range).

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe someone I haven't looked at.

By the way I'm looking for a hunter/skinner type knife.

Also are there any things I should look for. Like what steel is best for my use? I will be using the thing for hunting. It won't be a show piece. Any special treatments or what not? Thanks.

There's no doubt about it you picked two great knife makers, you couldn't go wrong with either one.

I'm not a hunter, but I would be a little more likely to make a Dozier my user. Even though Daniel Winkler is an ABS Mastersmith, I would think of his knives more as an Art piece.

For me the ultimate hunting knife would be an Ed Fowler "Pronghorn".

Oh, welcome aboard BFC.

Thanks -- that's the info I am wanting. I appreciate it -- keep it coming...

I would also check out Bill Buxton's nice hunters and EDC's at http://www.geocities.com/buxtonknives/.

The Mississippi D-2 crew,David Winston,Charles May,Gene Ingram,AA Blades.
All nice hunters.Good all around steel.Dozier,Krein good bets, too.

What style of knife do you want to buy, tactical, bowie, hunter etc.

What materials do you want in the knife, what type of steel, wood or micarta handle, Kydex or leather sheath, does the knifemaker use them?

What price or how much you going to spend?

You might have to get several knifemaker's in your price range then choose one of them.

I have knives from and the guys here at BF like several makers, Phillip Patton, Ray Laconico, Nick at NWA, GL Drew, DLG blades Derek Goodson and a new maker Scott T all make nice stuff and there is more.

Some of my thoughts to help you, good luck

You should go to the Exchange section of this forum, and take a look at all the Custom Knives (for sale by Individuals)........you should be able to find something there without a problem.:p

Thanks for the info. Those were some good suggestions. I like the Buxton's too...

All his knives have very good materials and Bill's workmanship looks top of the line. I am sure one of his knives you would be happy.

Don't forget you can contact Bill using email and have one made specifically for you, to your specifications and working it out with Bill is probably the best thing to do. Blade and handle length, materials and steel used.

Cheers!

Well Dozier is a very good maker. Krein Also. If you can catch a Cordova you'll get another good knife.
Forged blades? Try Craig Camerer he is a real rookies you can trust me.

Bob and the Dozier crew will have some great knives at the NYCKS

www.nyckshow.com/showinfo.html

We usually have a few knives that come back that will be "in stock". If you call the Dozier shop around the 16th or 17th of November, we will be happy to discuss what knives we have available and see if we have any that will fit your needs. Bob's heat treated D2 blade gets rave reviews from hunters because it holds an edge so well. You can also check with our resident expert Dozier customers on our discussion forum on www.dozierknives.com. They are always happy to share their experiences and offer suggestions.
They are a great group of guys.
Happy hunting for that perfect knife!! Answers to your questions are just a phone call away, feel free to give me a call anytime.

You cannot go wrong with a knife from Burt Foster. If you want to step in slowly, one of his blue collar knives is a great place to start. If you want to go whole hog, the sky is the limit.

Hunting knives. Bob Dozier, Gene Ingram. Scott from Razorback knives who is a member here also makes fine hunting knives.

Any of these guys know their stuff and make fine solid performers in the field.
