But I won't really think I'll appreciate it; CRKT has been total junk to my friends who have owned their folders in the past.

Is there some Japanese place that sells something like this that looks a little more exotic? (San-Mai blade or something, ray-skin handle) ?

Im on my second Hissastu folder and I think its awesome. I used the hell out of my first one then modded it, sold it and bought a new one. Its one of my favs. I have the fixed blade Hissastu, nice sheath nice blade but handle kind of sucks but it works. I say get one its only $50.

I also have a Hisshou which is awesome, much better and a really beautiful
blade a great sheath.

These are the only CRKT products I like and would spend my money on.

Kanetsune has some designs like hissatsu, flowing clean designs. I'd check them out.

I'm on his website, but it's pretty hard to follow, not knowing what's for sale, etc. Are there any online places that would sell something similar-looking to the hissastu, but of true japanese quality?

I'm a sucker for the ray-skin handle similar to this--but the blade is too long/not the grind I'm looking for.

I absolutely love this Lum-type of japanese tanto blade shape, or whatever it's called.

EDIT: Found a blend of what I'm looking for, but I can't afford the custom price at all; and I still like the 'sleeker' blade shape, and overall size of the Lum:

I used to do modifications on the CRKT Hissatsu. Here are a few pics of my old work. I don't do these anymore since I moved from FL to TN and had to leave my knifemaking equipment in FL.

The Hissastu is anything but junk. This is by far the best CRK&T product I've ever had! The fit and finish is spot on, the blade grinds are even on both sides, and it comes paper slicing sharp. The kydex sheath is of great quality and works well with the knife. I'm telling you, this knife is worth the price being charged and is/was quite a surprise to me when I first saw and held one. Knew then that I was going to have one!:thumbup::)

Bimmer1 that's awesome work! Do you know of anyone else who'd know how to do this sort of work?

Cutter, glad to hear a positive review from you  I still want a rayskin handle, though :p

I took Super Glue and gave my cord wraps several coats. When it cured out, it was nearly as hard as micarta, and certainly felt like sculted micarta in my hand.

But, you can buy ray skin and then cover it yourself. But to iterate, the CRK&T is a really nice piece of cutlery!:thumbup::)

The CRKT Hissatsu is a NICE knife. Finish is great, but if you want it sharp convex it.

HOLD THE PRESSES!

I don't know what I was thinking, but everything I said was in reference to the HISSHOU, and not the Hissatsu. I have never owned, nor held, in fact, never seen one in the "flesh".

I offer my apologies to you knivesandguns for giving you the wrong information.:o

Have Reese Weiland make you one to your specs. Mine is not a Hissatsu but is relatively the same size and only cost me $300.

I don't know anyone that is currently doing the Hissatsu handle mod. If I had my equipment in TN I would still be doing them.:D

I had an Ancient Edge, it was a well done knife, neat sheath.

I also have a modified version that Bimmer did for me a few years back. Very well done and really improves the looks of the CRKT product!

Too expensive for my budget, but thanks for the suggestion! Unless you know of an attractive quote for a knife similar to what I'm looking for.

Thanks Bimmer :p

You might want to check out the Paul Chen Practical Wakiszashi:

or the Paul Chen Tactical Wakizashi:

Carbon steel blades, and traditional or kraton handles. Priced around the same as the Hissastu.

If you want something like laminated steel or differential tempering, its available but plan on spending more like at least $300-400US.

Thanks for the links--they're a little too much for what I'm looking for, and they're also swords--too long.

Thanks though, they do look great.

The Jeff Burnley Kwaiken is sorta what I'm looking for--rayskin handle and decent steel, however I'm wanting a more japanese-tanto look to the grind of the blade...
