I want a good camera

All I've got right now is a couple of point & shoots. Not a fan. There's an enormous lag time between hitting the button and when it takes, I can't control the focus or the lighting effects.

So I want a new one! It will be used a lot indoors, but also a lot of hiking/outdoors pictures. Lots of blade photos.

Some requirements;
-good battery life (preferably AA, or rechargeable)
-fair non-digital zoom
-Controllable focus, and adjustable for lighting changes
-Quick shutter speed

Price range is probably around $200 (?) I was looking at some of the canon powershots for a while...

Thoughts?

Suggest looking at the Canon PowerShot A590 IS as it has manual and semi-auto contols (caveat: it is slow to recharge its flash)

But almost no compact p&s digicam is going to be fast enough if one expects to just press the shutter when one sees the shot ......
as auto-focus is not instanteous and takes a finite amount of time.

So how did photographers from years ago ever manage to capture fast action with manual focus lenses?
and there are lots of example out there including acknowledged masterpieces....
Almost ANY AutoFocus is faster than we can focus manually
- so why aren't we doing any better? ...

Did photographers from years ago with manual focus lenses wait to see the shot and then tried to focus to take the shot?
I know, that sounded absolutely ridiculous -
of course not, they pre-focussed their lenses and waited for the shot
then it was only literally tripping the shutter.

Use the same technique - Pre-Focus - by light half depression on the shutter button, hold that focus, re-compose, and wait for the shot - when the shot is seen, fully depress the shutter button, then the delay or shutter lag is less than 0.1 sec which is faster than human reaction time, or any AF on any camera from any brand ...... under any lighting conditions.

This shot was from a Canon SD1100 IS that was less than 200 and I'm a complete amateur, I've no problems with it and you can look up the specs on their site, seems very easy to use and holds a charge a long time, has loads of features. Happy with it for the money. (it's not slow and has auto focus)

Here's a longer distance shot with the same camera

I like the Powershot, too.

I bought an S3-is at Mallwart for $125 on clearance.

It has very fast "shutter response" if that's what you meant by shutter speed.

You can do well on eBay. There is not a whole lot of reason to go beyond 5meg for most of our applications here, you can save a whole lot of money by buying last years model with lower resolution than this year's latest.

Here's a 2 meg image:

Most SLR's do not utilize the new SDhc card yet, but the use for that card would be video.

Thanks guys, lots of good info. I've been looking around, I liked the looks of the xs110 from Canon a lot. Can get it for a shade over 200 at newegg.

I bought a Canon PowerShot SX110 for Christmas.
Point and Shoots have sure come along way.
This camera rocks. It has tons of manual settings the ISO goes to 3200, My Wifes' DSLR doesn't even go that high. The shutter is very fast and macro is awesome. 10x optical zoom is great.

Good choice. I would suggest you get some rechargeable nimh AA batteries to go with it. Sanyo Eneloop are a good choice.
