Hello.
I want to buy a new outdoor/survival knife. It must be fixed blade, 5-5.5 inch blade lenght, max. 100$. I want to batoning and chopping with him. I like Ka-bar 3/4 and Buck 119. If you have another sugestions, please tell me.
Thanks

Welcome to blade forums! You've come to the right place to ask for knife advice!

I personally prefer knives in the 4" category or the 6-7". The in between sizes can be a little a little cumbersome, too large to do fine tasks but not large enough for tasks like batoning where you need more length.

Kabar is a great place to start and you should have plenty left over from $100. I have the USMC Short Utility which was by very first knive purchase. It's pretty good for the money.

If you can afford an extra $10 I'd check out the Cold Steel Recon Scout. It's my main hard use knife for batoning and a little chopping too. It really takes a beating.

If you like Kabar, check out Ontario too.

BK2 is a nice pick. It is very suited for what you are looking for. Handle is just OK but later you can get the micarta scales and then you have a very good setup!

Where are you doing this "survival"? Rain forest? Artic circle? Desert? It matters.

What do you mean by "survival"? Are you going out with just one knife? Will you have any other equipment? Are you "car camping"? Hiking? Staying in a cabin? Tent? Are you really in a "suvival" situation?

Do you want a knife that works or are you more intersted in the way the knife looks?

No doubt, there is a knife that will suit you perfectly...we just really don't know what your situation is.

@marcinek
1.Forest
2.Tent expeditions. Not really a survival situation. I want to cut small wood (chopping and batoning) but also bacon and bread. I dont want a big one(+6'' blade) but not a small one (-4.5''). I want to be a resistant knife for chopping and batoning but not too big and heavy. I like to have a nice blade. So, please, tell me some options.
Thanks

SOG SEAL PUP, I have the ELITE version, and I love it, the PUP is made with the same material and its a little smaller, about 5 inches, perfect for outdoors.

If you have a "tent" and "bacon and bread" why not bring the right tool for chopping and batoning ? (READ: some kind of hatchet/ax) JMHO.

But if your set on beating on your knife, There's dozens in that range for under a $100.
I'm looking at the RAT RC 5 for my next knife. Prob. meet your needs.

H3ll, I just picked up little Mora for $14 that will prob. run circles around knives 2x 3x the prices. Not sure I'd want to be "battoning" with it, but what a great little knife - thanks to all on the board that brought Moras to my attention by the way

I think you want a Ka-Bar Becker BK-2. It chops like a much bigger blade and batons like no one's business. It'll work just fine on your food (clean it after chopping - heh) and it's well under your budget.

It even makes spoons if you like.

I forget what the model number is, but if you like Buck knives they make a five inch fixed blade knife. I think it's called a Pathfinder. It's a nice knife well in your price range.

Get a slicer (like a Mora or a Swiss Army Knife) for your bacon and bread (and 95% of the other stuff you need to do while camping).

If you feel the need to baton and chop (maybe there are no smaller sticks where you camp...only logs :D), get yourself a Kabar Becker or Ontario Ranger. They are great for having fun beating up innocent wood.

Just remember to get and bring a slicer! Its the tool you are going to use. The big chopper is just for fun.

If you want a slicer, check out Ragweed forge's trade knives, they are super thin, about 1/16, and bring along an ax. Ontario spec plus line are good bang for the buck. Someone mentioned the Buck Pathfinder #105, it has a 5 inch blade, I would not baton with it, but it should serve well, or the 119 Special, a bit bigger with a 6 inch blade. The Special can be found at Wally World for about $40, and I have only seen the Pathfinder at Bass Pro shop or at one of the online knife sites. The ESEE 5 is also a thick monster as well as the BK2.
