hey guys new guy here been reading a lot on the forum. I have a few knives spyderco endura and delica and sog and a gerber and some other ones, and I have a accusharp and a smith 2 sided pocket sharpener both of these do pretty decent considering the fixed angle and fixed amount of coarseness.i also just bought a smith 2 sided diamond stone 325 and 700 grit but I don't like how its 1/3 the size of my 4 inch blades so I may return this. but I feel like im gonna ruin my expensive knives( these are all new) so what would you recommend for sharpener?. ive heard the spyderco sharpmaker is good.

Welcome to the forums. I have a Sharp Maker and it does a good job for a good price. It is especially good at keeping an edge sharp. If however you want to re-profile or if the edge is really dull it can take a long time to remove the steel with a Sharp Maker. I have the ultra fine stones as well and personally like these stones.

The Sharpmaker is an excellent kit that comes with an exceptional DVD which shows you how to use the tool. For heavy reprofiling of blades it takes a long time due to medium and fine grit that come standard with the kit. There are ways to increase the coarseness by buying the 204D diamond rods or using SiC automotive sandpaper wrapped around the rods. It is well worth the money but it is not the fastest way to sharpen knives. It is a safe way to learn and not do damage to you knives as long as you follow the directions. The brass safety rods should be used at all times to keep your digits safe. :)

To me ultra fine are not necessary but are worth the extra dollars. I get better edges when I use the ultra fine stones. I also think the ultra fine are great for touch ups.

Are you only looking at guided systems?

The Sharpmaker gets a lot of praise for maintenance once the edge is ground to match its pre-set, the DMT aligner, Lansky, Gatco, Worksharp field sharpener are all possible choices as well for heavier work to complement the Sharpmaker or to use by themselves.

The price tag for more robust guided and powered systems will start to climb quickly - the possible list goes on and on - Edge-Pro, Worksharp, ...

I make a sharpening widget (link in my signature) that bridges the gap between guided systems and freehand pretty effectively - will give you a lot more flexibility, and ultimately freehand is just a better way to go IMHO.

Best of luck with whatever you choose, and it would be a good idea to buy some cheap cutlery to practice on - no sense taking steel off your better knives while learning.
