There's a lot of talk about super steels. Someone may ask a question related to grind or ergos or carryabillity, and it's just a matter of time before someone chimes in with something like, "I wish my...was in Cruwear/S110V/S90V/M4..." I'm just waiting for someone to request a spoon in M390.

My question is, how many people that wait with bated breath for these sprint runs actually have an issue where they find themselves sharpening their knives too often for their liking--where S30V is inadequate for them? Are they *really* sharpening that often, or do they (like me, I'll admit) just like the idea of having a super-terrific-amazing-awesome-sauce knife? Be honest!

If/when you sharpen S30V and M390 come back to us. If I can cut my sharpening time in half, and still have a keener, longer lasting edge from M390 of course I'd choose it over S30V! I like S30V, it's a great steel for blades, but from my experiences with it as well as from an array of other steels I sure wouldn't call it a favorite.

M390 for instance, is a f**king incredible steel for knives. It's a favorite of mine(as well as many others on here) for a reason. We live in a world of constant advancements and M390 is most certainly an advancement over S30V.

While I am not a steel junkie, I certainly appreciate the fact that

1) Some people are steel junkies and just love putting any new steel through it's paces. Hence things like the Spyderco Mule line.

2) And some people just have not found the perfect steel and will keep on trying until they do. S30V is inadequate for them.

3) And some people just need to buy whatever they are told by marketing is the most sexy super-terrific-amazing-awesome-sauce new steel out there.

I guess I would only expect the folks in 3) to request a spoon made from it.

You might want to check the American Kami line of titanium utensils. The medium spork is very useful.

M390 was developed as an injection mold steel, resistant to corrosion from hot plastic and to abrasion from glass fibers reinforcing said hot plastic. So-o-o, if your breakfast cereal is both gritty and caustic, then M390 is the spoon alloy for you!

When buying a higher end/higher dollar knife I do like to see some of the super steels used CPM 20/90/110V, M4,390 and etc etc.
Your paying a premium the materials should be premium also in my mind.

Small increases in performance often come at much larger increases in cost. You have to be ok with paying more $$$ for smaller gains in overall performance. If that doesn’t settle well with a person then it maybe better to stick with lower cost proven knife steels.

Heck Yeah Bubba ! One of these here in your favoright super steel .:thumbsup:

So far I count one person who needs less sharpening effort. The rest have just made spoon jokes. :)
I , for one , wasn't just joking . If Cold Steel made something like Kabar's Tactical Spork , in their CTS XHP with DLC coating , I'd be sorely tempted !

My favorite is M4. It’s a workhorse that sharpens like something much softer, 154cm comes to mind. S30V can be a burr hound in comparison. I love a patina that shows the work, and I love something I can put a hair whittling edge on in 10 or so minutes.

M4, and hap40, are my only EDC’s right now. I’ll probably get some M390 equivalent later on. That stuff is bad to the bone. The only thing S30V has over M390 is affordability. As they say, you get what you pay for.

I find anything S30V or above is more than adequate for my needs. That said, I would much rather sharpen M390, K390, S35VN or M4 than S30V, which I find often ends up with an obnoxious burr or wire edge.

If we are talking about m390 and its analogs specifically then part of the joy of those super steels is how easily they touch up. I don’t know how they made steels that sharpen so well and yet are so abrasion resistant.

Steels like s30v to s110v in my experience are less easy to sharpen because they sometimes seem to form very stubborn burrs.
