. . . but I dunno where to get em! 1sks doesn't carry them, but lots of y'all seem to have them, so any suggestions?

I'm just fascinated by the concept of an inexpensive knife that can outcut lots of other knives.

Try Smoky Mountain Knife Works. I bought two olive wood handled No. 8's a few weeks ago for about $8 ea. I'm in the process of customizing one of them now (drop point blade, reshaped and refinished handle).

Hey, good thinking. Dunno why they didn't cross my mind before--I was just there a little while ago. Stopped on my way home from Blade.

Thanks. :)

I bought my first Opinel a couple of weeks back and love it! For the money they rock. I got a #7 and use it primarily for cutting food: apples, bagels etc when I am at work so I don't have to use my stockman which handles everything else from packages, threads, etc. and may not be the most hygenic knife.
The combination of thin blade and carbon steel was a breeze to get shaving sharp in minutes. They are light yet sturdy and you won't cry a river if you lose it.
I am tempted to get another, probably the slightly larger #8. I say go for it and you will not be disappointed!

Opinels! Best place to get 'em, Ebay! Just bought a six pack of the #7's for around 8 bucks each. A guy in Berlin Germany had them to me in Canada in about 5 business days. Give the #7 a shot they are my favourites for EDC.

Crosman: Oh, please. French folks that make knives are the French folks I *want* to support. Maybe if they gain power in France the whole country will shift toward the knife-knut perspective. :)

I didnt mean Opinel. I support Opinel, I love em.

I meant that one dealer, trashing france but still selling French merchandise. :barf:

Crosman,
You're not really clear on the idea you were trying to convey...

according to your quote, were you trying to discourage purchases from Knifecenter.com? Were you making a comment on the ndsproducts.com political and business practices?

Please elaborate...

I love my No7's, I have a stainless and a carbon steel. Scary sharp, and only £3.95! If I lose one, or lend it to someone who wrecks it, I'll just get another.
Opinel + Spyderco Sharpmaker = :D

Just for a laugh I tried shaving with a #7 once. Got it good and sharp with a leather strop and away I went. It worked but I don't recommend it to anyone unless you're a masochist with a liking for razor burn. By the way I'm talking about a three square inch part of my chinny chin chin, strictly to satisfy my curiosity as to whether it could work or not.

I got a #12

And after a bit of fooling around...

Nice job! Opinels rock! You can't beat a thin, flat ground, carbon steel blade :)

Easy. I Didn't. :p

I just sat down one day with a carving knife and some sandpaper and had at it.

I'm founding out lately just how much I can get done while watching a movie...

Guess that makes me a real armchair warrior...

Do a search on Opinel (or "custom opinel") and you'll find that there are a lot of folks who customize their lil' knives. At only $12, you can't lose! Give it a shot - you'll be hooked.

Nice work pendentive! Y'know Opinel makes a model with a big block of a handle specifically for carving. Carbon steel #8 I think. I hope its for carving...maybe it's a baseball bat with a blade on the end...:(
