I'm thinking of getting a esse 4 5 or 6. Leaning towards the 5, but I notice nobody seems to really talk about the laser strike, which seems to be in the same size category as these. Any reason why people don't like it or am I just not looking hard enough?

Lightning strike looks like a great knife. I would definitely consider it. Compared to a "5" model, the "5" has a thicker blade, and it is shaped differently.
I bought a "5" model, I was dead set on the venom green series, and HAD to have it. Otherwise the lightning strike would have been just right.
There is also about a $45-50 difference in the two. If you want to save that $, get the strike, you can't go wrong either way.

The Laser Strike is the only ESEE I would want. It is just one of the new releases. If it is what you want go for it.

I've actually enjoyed the Laser Strike the couple times I've had a chance to play around with it. I haven't owned it long however and still have not had the chance to really put it through it's paces. In my experience it's hard to go wrong with anything from ESEE. The 5 is probably my least favorite, it just feels kinda "clunky".

the laser strike is apparently a love it or hate it knife - I haven't handled it so I don't have an opinion.
the 4 has a short handle, so if you have large hands it may not be comfortable for long periods of use. (or pick up a set of the longer aftermarket G10 scales made/sold by the knife connection)
the 5 is a dead hunk of steel in my hand - it's a functional knife, but due to the thickness there is a learning curve to get it to do tasks that seem instinctive with other, thinner blades.
the 6 is one of my favorite blades - it just feels right in my hand.

Of the ones you mentioned the 4 (with TKC G10 scales) and the Laser Strike are on my short list (all determined from internet research). I'd likely go with the LS due to the fact that I get all the pros of the 4 w/o having to buy scales to make the handle long enough for my grip. That said, I cannot get the BK17 out of my head--though after handling that one a few times, I am convinced that I would have to buy after-market scales to make up for the all-too-thin handle (I'd prefer different materials too); yeah, the BK17 and the BK7 (a larger blade, but not as thick as the ESEE5--comparable to the ESEE 6) are also on that short list... hope this helps.

Aias just making sure short list means something you like not vice versa correct? Also I'm open to bk recommendations but I'm concerned about the sheath everyone says it dulls the blade and if I'm gonna spend the same amount for an esee and a bk plus new sheath I figure why not save myself the trouble and just get the esee

B.A. pic sky horse that's a purrty knife ya got there and it looks like the same uses I intend for my knife choice

Yes, short list is a good thing... I too am concerned with BK sheaths, which is why I lean towards the ESEE's too.

If the LS is comfortable in your hand then it is an amazing knife if not you wont ever use it. It is either super comfortable or not at all really no middle ground. The LS would be the ESEE I would use if I ever needed something larger than my 3 and smaller than a machete which I really dont ever see happening. I take ESEE over the Beckers due to the sheath and in my eyes the 1095 than Rowen uses for the ESEE blades is heat treated a good deal better than Kabars 1095CV.

I wish I could see these knives in person to help make that determination but I dont know anywhere in the Pittsburgh area that sells them

I just ordered and received a ESEE 3mil w/MOLLE for my SWAT-cop son-in-law. Will probably order one now for me too. Sometimes, you have to read the posts and trusts them. You can always sell for close to what you have in it. Not very expensive, really. About the cheapest knife that I have.

the BK16 & 17 sheaths do not dull the blades.
adding liners helps the feel a LOT - and are pretty easy to make out of a 5 gal. plastic bucket or a DVD case.

Dang it 1066vik you just had to go and complicate things! Lol I didn't realize those two had good shears and the bk16 looks a lot like esee LS ...now this decisions jus got a lot harder and it's a classic esee or Becker

...crap

Also does anybody know if the esse5 or bks have a slot in the middle of the blade so I could store stuff (like fire steel of tinder) like in the LS?

I know I'm getting a little off topic now but what bk would be equivalent or close to an esee 5 or 6? I looking for something big for chopping/batoning/maybe prying but not machete size. I have an izula 2 for the small tasks. The more I look at prices and how easy it looks to make your own micarta I'm starting to feel myself sway to the dark side and join Darth Becker

The Becker BK2 is the ESEE 5's euivalent.

The Becker grivory scales are mostly hollow and the handles have cutouts in them - so there is room to store tinder or a $20.
the BK7 - is the closest Becker to the ESEE6.
OTOH, the 6 is just about a perfect GP field knife and pairs VERY well with the Izzy 2. (so does the BK9 and/or Junglas for true chopper sized tools)
