I sent out my beloved 940BK for a trade yesterday. Walking out of the post office I thought "man, that was one darn good knife". Now I'm missing it already.
940 is one of the best pocket knives I own/have owned. It is beautiful to look at, material is top notch, fit & finish is... It's Benchmade!, and there's the infamous reverse tanto.... what else do I want? Well, there was one thing I wanted it to change/upgrade. Before I go on let me say one more good thing about three 940.
It is a great gent's knife that can withstand tactical or even hard uses. Frankly, I often think it is better hard use edc knife than spydie's PM2 unlike many would think otherwise due to it's construction & strong tip.
Unfortunately (perhaps fortunately for the new owner), I never put the knife on hard use. I used it mainly as paper cutter & envelope opener. Due to it's short blade height, I was able to snick the blade under the enclosure of an envelope better than most knives. Over the years however, I realize that it is not the best slicer or even paper cutter. For such a narrow blade with, there are lots of lines happening on the blade, the grind begins at near a half of the blade; thus less acute actual cutting edge.
There were many times I wished that my 940 has a FFG. For a such slender & delicate knife, I would give up the tip strength for better slicing capability. So, would I buy a 940 again? Absolutely!
Yet, I'd love to have next one to be 940-2 CF handle, open pillar construction with purple stand off, and with m390 FFG blade.
