I want my OTHER 17 lumens!

So I ordered a Fenix LD01R2 through Amazon's vendor "EdisonBrite LED" (If it's not cool for me to have that specific of info, mods - please remove it). As a couple reviews said, people received the original 72 lumen model. I figured that out of the 55 or so reviews, only about 5 were saying that, so I was in good shape and they had probably taken care of it.

Nope. I just got it today and I'm out my 17 lumens that I paid extra for. Is it worth returning the item to Amazon for the right model? Or should I just pursue a refund for the difference? I'm not sure that there's any new technology in the R2 model such as the LED model or anything, but I know that it had 85 lumens. The only place on the box that says "LD01R2" is Amazon's shipping label, so it could have just been labeled wrong. Who knows...

IMHO, 17 lumens is not worth getting worked up about (unless, of course, your light only puts out 17 in the first place,)

Chances are, if you put your light side-by-side with one rated at the expected 85 lumens, you'd have to strain real hard to see much difference.

I do think that the "R2" designates a new breed of LED (I could be wrong,) so you might want to see what other advantages are offered by this particular breed. Things like color temperature and beam artifacts would be more of a deciding factor for me.

However, there is also the matter of principle, that one light was apparently advertised, though another delivered. If that matters much to you, by all means, raise a stink. I'd bet that the seller in question doesn't have any clue about what he's moving at any given time, or that such differences matter to people.

Well here's their reply, word for word. Does this hold ground in everyone's eyes?

Dear Shawn,
Sorry about the situation.
Most current version of LD01 has 72 lumens as the manufacturer changed specifications for better performance and to correct overheating issues.
Sorry about the mismatch in description.
As you have already received delivery, we can offer you $10 refund to keep the item received.
Please let us know your preference.
Thank you.

I checked the Fenix-Store site and it says "product not found" for the LD01R2, so did they actually discontinue it then? I said yes to that, as I figure I can't get the LD01 for ten dollars less than what I paid.

Even side by side, shining against a white wall, you will see very little difference between 72 and 85 lumens.

Well that's good to know. I honestly don't know too much about flashlights, and this is my first flashlight purchase that didn't come from the dollar section

Thanks for the wisdom guys :)

Shawn,

You have actually received a more current version than the one initially advertised. The R2 designation is the emitter's bin. The emitter to the version advertised would be a Cree XR-E R2. The version you received is a Cree XP-G R4.

The R2 does have a slight advantage of having more throw than the R4 counterpart, however, the R4 will be brighter and more efficient (longer runtime on high and low). The trade off is worth it, imo, as the throw advantage on a light this size is negligible.

The R2 uses PWM for regulation and maintains a consistent tint from low to high. Some people are sensitive to PWM if the frequency is low (strobe effect). The R4 version is current controlled: tint on lower levels may appear different than that on high (example: low mode tint appears slightly yellow or green, while on high tint appears more white).

All in all, you picked up a very good keychain light.

That's actually pretty sweet lol. Thanks Moshow9!

Since you guys are all light guys and I don't want to make a new thread, would you suggest keeping the pocket clip on the light even if it's on my keychain? I was thinking it may come in handy at some point - but it's added bulk if I never have a need for it

I'm not familiar with the light in question, but the pocket clip could possibly be used to clip the light to the bill of a cap for hands-free use. Also, clips are generally made from quality tempered steel, and they tend to make dandy ad-hoc screwdrivers and prybars (for little stuff like staples and thumbtacks, at least.) It might come in handy. Of course, you have to balance any potential benefit against how much it bugs you to have the clip on the light all the time. Does it snag or make the light uncomfortable to use? Does it bang around and ding up the other crap on your keychain?

I'd keep it around for a while to see if A, you end up using it for anything, and B, if you find it to be a nuisance.

I have to agree, the difference in the lumen count is barely noticeable. You probably wouldn't notice anything when using the flashlight in a real world application. As for me, a super bright flashlight (150 lumens or better) is great but for the lion's share of times a 50 lumen light is more than enough. I love the Fenix E21; it runs on 2AA, has a high output of 150 lumens and a lower output of around 48 lumens. Bright enough and runs on extremely easily accessible batteries; this is my go-to flashlight whether I have to light up the crawlspace and do repairs or spotlight an intruder in the middle of the night.

I think my pocket clip was flubbed up. It doesn't rest flat on the light - as if they bent it too far in upon making it. It still seems pretty tight on there and would still clip to things well though

I'm worried about bending it to where it should be as I'm not sure what kind of metal I'm dealing with and I don't want to weaken it

Off topic but...Proud2Deviate: What movie/program is the clip in your post from? Looks like something I would enjoy:thumbup:

Nah, that's just how they are. We've sold hundreds of those and they always come with those crappy clips. The clip is the one major sticking point I have with the LD01.

That's pretty strange. What do you prefer over the LD01 for a AAA keychain light?

I personally bump up to a CR123 light (JETBeam RRT-01). Having a light I regularly use on my keychain is annoying.

That said, I'd go with a 4Sevens Preon 0 or an Olight i3 if I had to choose a AAA light. I really like the super floody beam of the P0.

As I've only been carrying the light for less than a week I can definitely see how carrying a bigger one could be useful, as I've found myself using it more than I thought I would. However, I'm probably not going to be buying any other lights for awhile (at least not for myself) until I find a better/steady job.

I did like the Preon 0 but went with the Fenix for some reason... I know there was one but I just can't remember anymore :D

I'll have to check on JETBeam, I don't think I've seen anything by them
