HI GUYS, ALTHOUGH I OWN SEVERAL BLADES, I WANT TO SHORTEN MY LIST TO THREE OR FOUR (MAX), BUT I WANT THEM TO BE REPRESENTATIVE.

HERE IS WHAT I HAVE THOUGHT:

1. THEY HAVE TO BE OF DIFFERENT SIZES. E.G.: 3, 6, 9 INCHES.
2. THEY HAVE TO HAVE DIFFERENT KINDS OF STEEL.E.G. : TOOL, CARBON, INOX.
3. THEY SHOULD BE OF DIFFERENT ORIGINS, E.G: CUSTOM, FACTORY, LIMITED EDITION.

THESE ARE MY PICKS:

1. TOOL-STEEL, 4.5 IN., LIMITED EDITION: ONTARIO AFGHAN SIGNATURE SERIES S7 STEEL:

2. STAINLESS 7 INCH, CUSTOM: (MY OWN DESIGN, I OWN THIS ONE)

3. HERE IS WHERE I WANT SUGGESTION, ACCORDING TO MY LOGIC IT HAS TO BE 8+ BLADE...

OR SHOULD I GO:

1. SHORT CARBON. PRODUCTION.
2. MEDIUM STAILESS. CUSTOM
3. LARGE TOOL STEEL, LIMITED EDITION, ...AND I GET A BUSSE.

THANKS.

My advice would be to stop trying to categorize your collection so much and just buy what you like or are going to use. That's my take on it, but really I'm more of a knife accumulator than I am a knife collector.

HI,
1) YOUR BEST BET IS TO LOOK AT DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS WEBSITES AND CHOOSE WHAT YOU LIKE. IF YOU WANT A NICE TOOL STEEL KNIFE I WOULD RECOMMEND BLIND HORSE KNIVES OR BARK RIVER KNIFE AND TOOL.
2) AVOID ANY STEEL FROM CHINA IF YOU CAN. ELMAX IS AMAZING, AND QUITE UNIQUE. SPYDERCO MADE A COOL TEST BLADE IN ELMAX. 1095 IS A GREAT SIMPLE TOOL STEEL. 02 and AEB-L ARE MY FAVORITES SO MAKE SURE YOU GET ONE OF THOSE. VG-10 IS CHIPPY, SO IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE TOUGH ON IT, I'D AVOID VG-10.
3) CHECK OUT THE FORUMS FOR CUSTOM MAKERS. LOTS OF GREAT OFFERINGS FOR INEXPENSIVE PRICES. YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH SPYDERCO, BUSSE, BOKER, BEKER ETC.
4) TYPING IN CAPS MAKES IT HARD TO READ.
5) WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE 8" +? THAT IS A HUGE KNIFE AND MIGHT BE PRETTY ANNOYING TO USE.

Tks mkjellgren, I am one of those, I own probably 200 knives, (i stopped counting a long time ago)...

What´s happening is, I´ve made a big effort on buying every single one of my blades, and I charish them much, so I saved them and never used them...after a few years I sold an Extrema Ratio to a friend, it was a big effort for him too, but he did use it, On my last outing, I decided I owned a few too many high quality knives, for not to have one or a few to use....

therefore I am deciding wich ones will keep me company.

thanks.

Just curious, why the hole in your drawing on the blade?

What purpose does it serve?

You are going to have to use your knives to figure out which ones you like using. That's how one decides which knives they like as users...not by some theoretical algorithm.

Start using your knives, keep the ones that work...sell the ones that don't. It's far, far simpler than you are making it.

1. I didnt really contemplated Bark River and Blind Horse, but I visited their websites and i didnt feel really tempted.
2. Thanks a forgot about 1095, I own several kabars, and tops in 1095, I never contemplated elmax, aeb-l. i own a couple in vg10.
3. I own many bokers, a few spidercos, not a single busse yet, all of recent beckers (if you meant bk&t´s).
4. I´ll have in mind the caps thing.
5. I thought 8 inch would come in hand in some situations, because i dont think i´ll use two knives in 6 inches.

thanks.

I think that question goes to my point about using one's knives. If you don't use your knives, then you end up designing a knife that's got a hole in it for no apparent functional reason.

It's actually a very nice looking knife, but I have seen designers who clearly have never used a knife come up with some really, really nonsensical designs. (One seems to have achieved quite a bit of success....maybe selling to other people who don't use their knives. :D)

And one last thing....nothing wrong with collecting knives, or having "safe queens," or being a collector. It's just that when it comes to making or determining "users," you have to use.

tool steel is carbon steel.

True, sort of, but not all carbon steels are tool steels. Tool steels like O1, A2, D2 and so on have significant amounts of alloying elements like chromium, tungsten, vanadium, molybdenum etc. Plain carbon steels like 1084 and 1095 have little or none.

Your design is quite good, except the holes in the blade serve no purpose except to fill up with gunk and possibly weaken the blade. If weight is a concern, there are better ways to lighten a knife without compromising so much strength.

If you're looking at Busses in that size range, you're definitely in the same budget category as a true custom/handmade knife in pretty much any steel you desire. I (and many other makers, I'm sure) would be happy to give you a quote.

I thought about making a very short handle on a 7inch blade, and a whole on the blade to put my finger in...so I could move my hand towards the blade. the result is a 7 inch blade that is as big as an standard 5.5 or 6in

just a matter of size.

Not to keep belaboring this point...but did you actually try doing that? Did you try cutting things with your finger stuck in that hole?

Go out and start using your knives....especially if you want to pick out your users or design blades.

i contacted several custom makers on this forum before making the design as a matter of fact, thought i asked you to quote the fabrication and you turned me down... but, I´m probably wrong since it seems to be the first time you see the drawing... and we are not too late to reach an agreement.

Anyway, it is currently being waterjet-cut in s30v. Not ground yet, but i got a quote already. I´ll write you this morning, hopefully we´ll get to an agreement.

hahaha...yes I did. dont mind about making a critique of my design, I extensively test the design in the product development phase, and yes, I did cut some mock ups in wood to test the ergos.

Although I tested bending and shear force in Solid Works, I know it needs some tests in other CAM sofware, (it turned out stronger than kabar potbelly on bending force and a lot stronger axis bending...anyway, i just talked with the guys at waterjet, and it is on hold, until I review some other aspects of material use efficiency....but the perforation of the blade will inevitably go in...

thanks for your opinion though, all feedback is verywell wellcomed.

I don't recall that, but of course I may have forgotten. I very rarely turn down work. ;)

Cool, you can reach me through my website email or by pm here on the forum.
