I want some diamond benchstones. Which brand should I get?

The title says it all. I am tired of fighting with my Lansky on some knives and would like to get diamond stones. I am planing to finish sharpening with black and green compound, if that matters.

Would also be nice if it were Made in America because I have had a bad experience with Chicom diamond surfaces.

I would prefer continuous surface but, if someone were to make a compelling argument for interrupted, I might reconsider.

I think you will find most recommendation toward DMT. I would first recommend the duosharp coarse and fine for basic sharpening. If your are interested in a complete set the diasharps are the way to go.

Just to throw another name out there "Atoma".
If you want tiny little things to put in your bag for camping or use to raise slurries, "Diaface".
More expensive than DMT's, but they have better quality controls.

I use DMT, Lansky, Smiths, and EZ Lap to professionally sharpen for over ten years. My recommendation is DMT they are by far the best I have found.

I see that DMT makes double sided Dia Sharp stones. However they only come in 6 inch length and I was looking for 8 inches. But the 6 inch would fit the duo sharp base.

Thanks for the help. Please keep the suggestions coming.

Personally, I would not go with the 6" stones. I have one 6" DMT extra coarse stone, it's kind of a pain in the butt to use. At one point I actually reprofiled an edge with a 1000 grit waterstone because the smaller diamond stone makes things so difficult for me.

Thanks for that info.

Has anybody tried EXE-lap diamond stones? I have heard good thing about this company in the past but know nothing about them now.

I think you mean EZE-LAP, I have Dmt's and a Trend which is pricey

If you want 8" and double-sided, try out the Duo-Sharp (interrupted surface) hone in Coarse/Fine (45/25 micron). Probably the most useful combination I've ever spent money on. DMT makes a 10" version, as well.

As far as a continuous surface diamond stone the Atoma is by far superior. I own both the continuous and interrupted DMTs also but they don't hold a candle to the Atoma. But for the occasional sharpener and even the professional the DMTs can be very useful. I use them allot since I have them. But I'll never replace them with a like DMT when they wear out. If ever. I picked all of mine up used. So for the money they have been a sound investment.

DMT's are fine, and are easy to find. I would get the Duo sharp "Obsessed with Edges" recommended.
8" is good, 10" is better. Get the bench stand with one. That is going to be your best bet for the money.
I don't think that a continuous surface makes a lot of difference. I doubt that you will wear it out anytime soon.

Ok, so i'm going to start by apologizing for sounding like a broken record here, but i have not had good experiences with dmt dia-sharps. Always try to buy in person. All the reviews i have seen for eze-lap have looked good (all 10 unfortunately). As soon as i have the money, they are next on my list. They just don't have the extreme grit ranges that some of the other companies do.

If you are not sure what size suits you best, i suggest getting some sandpaper and some scrap wood. Just make some mock stones to test what size stone suits your technique. I personally don't like stones larger than 6", as an example.

DMT.

If you do get one of the rare problems, they have a warranty.

I have DMT products 25 years old, and still working great.

I have DMT & EZE lap. They are both good.
I think EZE lap take longer to wear in, but they are decent stones.

I have been reading this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...pening-continuous-or-interrupted-stones/page2

And it has cemented my want of a continuous surface. I don't see a reason to leave continuous surfaces when I have gotten such good results. As for the EZE lap, I have seen one review on the big A where the owner managed to remove the diamonds from the stone. I have no idea how he did that but I suspect that can happen to any diamond stone.

I use DMT, cant say anything bad about them.
I'm a carpenter in training and sharpen a lot of tools so I was willing to put in in the cash.

I have the duo side 4"x10" fine and coarse. A 2.5"x8" coarse. A 2"x6" fine. A 2"x6" coarse, and a 1"x4" coarse for backpacking.
All DMT (Obviously)

I suspect the same. It is a tool if misused it can be damaged...the same is true for a sledge hammer:)

After I posted this I have found several other review describing this same problem... because the owners were trying to lap waterstones on the EZE-Lap. Probably saw "Lap" in the name and thought it was for lapping.

Gavko actually did a review on the EZE Lap stone and he liked it.
