I don't see how...

Hey there Guys! I don't post too often, but this is one of the first places I come to when I get on the net. I love reading the posts and I almost feel like I know some of you guys personally. My other computer is disassembled right now which has my newest login and pass, etc, so I had to use this old I.D.

Anyway, here's the deal. I love my Busse blades. I've got four of them right now. As far as I'm concerned, they're the best going. I do quite a bit of backpacking and hiking, and I am never out there without a Busse by my side. My problem is with what's available right now. I keep hearing that some new models are coming, but it's been a while. I am looking for a good utility knife for around camp, the kitchen, and just doing all the little chores. I have a Spyderco Moran, and it's OK I guess, but I've gotten used to that nuclear toughness found only in a Busse. The Moran is sharp, but seems to me to be a hair on the flimsy side. Maybe it's not, but if it came down to that being the only knife that I have at the time, I wouldn't be willing to bet my life on it.

So, I'm looking for a good 3-4" inch blade, preferrably in the 3/16" thickness range. I am not looking for a wide knife. I want something with a smaller profile. What am I looking for? Something in the way of a Lean Mean Street--except I don't want to pay 300-400 for it. Can I afford it? Yes. But, I don't see paying that kind of money when I could get another Battle Mistress for the same amount.

Any suggestions or ideas of blades out there that would come close to a Busse (I know, blasphemy, right?)? I have a Rinadli Sharkooth, but it's a Tanto Point, and I want something that lends itself a little more to stuff around the camp. The Sharktooth is a great little carry piece for self defense, but not real practical out on the trail.

Any suggestions or ideas? I've got a good bonus coming at the end of the month and that's at the top of my list. I would appreciate any suggestions that you could give.

G-Man,
I know this isn't what you are going to want to hear ;)

This is just a gut feeling I have but I think it only makes sense that Busse Combat will come out with something to replace the Badger. Now, if it were identical to the Badger then why discontinue it originally so the only thing left is to come out with a blade of similar size(length) but with some alterations.
How many alterations can be made to a blade this size, well probably a lot.

We can only hope that because of the popularity of the 3/16" knives in the past that (LMS, ZT series) they will come out with something in this range.

I suggest you wait a couple more weeks and see what happens. Of course you could always call the shop, maybe talk to Jerry and see if he would give you a heads up.;) If so email me the scoop off-line ;):D

Hiya G-Man,

Busse makes a Euro 4 that looks like the Satin Jack with a shorter blade. There's a picture of it on this page http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=188478&perpage=20&pagenumber=3 and a shot of all the Euro-Busse models on page 4 of that same thread. The Euro 4 might be just what you're looking for.

You could check with Dirk (Busse's European OberMeister) to see if you could get one sent to you.

Yours in nuclear "short but tough" bombproof blades,
Greg

RokJok, I appreciate the info on that one. I wasn't aware of that model. I'll have to see if I can find a way to get up with Dirk and see what the rules and regs are for getting one of those Euro 4's. That looks to be exactly what I am wanting.

Eric, I appreciate the input on that. I know the BA was discontinued, but if the replacement was similar, then I don't know that it would be for me. I like the wide knives in a chopper, but not in what I'm looking for here. I might call them and see what's up.

I know I've emailed Marc a few times about that chopper design that Andrew Lynch had in mind. I love that design and really do want a Busse in that configuration. About 12", with that full belly for chopping? Forget about it!! Put a fork in me, I'm done. :D

Though Idon't own one, how about the Assault Shaker???

That looks like it would fit the bill for hiking/backpacking.

What about a Killer B, same 1/4" stock but a much narrower profile.

Just throwing out ideas over here ;):D

Thanks for both of your suggestions, but I had already thought about both of those, and wouldn't be able to use either for much the same reason--the handle.

The Assault shaker doesn't have one, and that might prove to be just a little slippery in certain circumstances. I like the Micarta slabs that help with purchase of the grip.

Thought about the Killer Bee. Hadn't held one, but from what I've heard and how the handle is described, it sounds like it might be just a bit abrasive for routine use. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but isn't that cord that's been secured with some type of expoxy? It might work, but I'd like to hear from someone about the feel of this handle and how it works for them.

Thanks again, though!!

Let's bring the beast to life :D ! Come on Jerry :) .

About a smaller model, there have been some good suggestions. Also, it can't be too long before Busse announces its new models. They might make just what you're looking for, who knows.

I agree that the Assault shaker feels a little small in my own hands, but I do like the Killer B handle a lot. It's definitely not going anywhere unless you want it to!
A Killer B with more of a spear point (whether or not it had Micarta or the cordage) would really be the ticket:)

I would love to see something along the lines of a Lean Mean Street again.(I kinda like Erics idea of a Lean Badger also:cool:.)

About the European Combat 4 model. I also was curious about something bigger than a MS and smaller than the Badger. So I emailed Dirk....he was prompt in his reply but alas by contract with Busse couild NOT sell one and ship it to the US. Thats fair enough....What Dirk did say in reply however was that friends that I have in Europe could purchase one, have it sent to them and then mailed to me. That is something that I am considering doing. The Euro Combat 4 seems to be just the ticket also.

...............While we wait on the folder.

There are lots of superb knives that would fit the bill. I must confess that i use non-Busses for the tasks suggested. But I'm not going to go there on the Busse forum!
I've been looking at the ZTs which would be great, I think. And then there is always the custom shop...
I do think it would be worth the money, even if you could get a bigger standard model for similar dollars. Apples and oranges...

The crystal ball is in the shop for repairs. It kept showing a folder...:D

As usual, Eric's thinking is where I am at. It would not surprise me if a new style Badger of some sort came out that suited your bill. There is a gap, if you will, in the line that a new BA could fill.

I too prefer the thick and wide blades in a chopper but something with a thinner aspect ratio and perhaps 3/16ths for general camp/hunting chores.

For what it's worth, there is talk of things in the brew at Wauseon. Calm down ... we're talking FIXED blades here.

I have a Busse Steel Heart, I just took it on a camping trip last weekend and love it.

I know this will sound like heresy on a Busse forum but I have a TOPS Laser Strike (http://www.jungletraining.com/coming.htm also check out the "RAT" on the same page... haven't used that one though) and I thought it made a great companion knife to my Steel Heart... it performed well as a "chore" knife.

I have been thinking about getting an Assault Shaker as my chore knife but am still undecided, I like the Laser Strike - its comfortable, affordable, and performs well. If (what am I saying)... WHEN I get the Assault Shaker, I'll let you know how it compares.

PS: Keep in mind that even though the Natural Outlaw is bigger than you want the choil in front of the guard allows you to "choke" down on the blade and do much finer work

Good Luck,
Eek
