I want to buy a pocket knife.

Price range?
Steel of choice?
Blade length?
Blade shape?
Blade grind?

The big three knife companies are Benchmade, Kershaw and Spyderco.

Can you give us a price range, what type of lock you prefer and a blade length so we can help give you recommendations

Price range is important, as is any specific features you want. Not to be a smartazz, but are you over/under 18? Also, what prompted you to suddendly want a pocket knife? Is it something for work, or something to carry for day to day needs?

Lotta questions, and you are not obligated to answer, except for the price range!:) And welcome to Bladeforums.

Not for work, I'll just say it's for self defence or for anything that comes up. Umm my other one couldn't fit in my pockets

Five inch blade length, or a 5" handle length? If handle, then blade will be around 3.5" to 4.0". How about weight, any number to stay under? Again with the questions, but we need to narrow it down as much as possible. Also, have you looked at any lock styles that you think you would prefer.

See I was typing while Skimo was answering!

Do you know the model number for that? I think it's the m16-something SF. And the blade is not "small" (but that is subjective). Around what size blade do you need?

What do you mean by "the things on the sides"? The scales, or handles? The thumbstuds on the blade itself? Or the flipper/hilt? I really like the flipper because it can be used to open the blade as you pull it out of your pocket.

I would stay away from the tanto blade if you are not experienced sharpening it (like me).

About the serrations, most people stay away from them. I can't sharpen them either.

I would say look for video reviews on youtube and you'll start making up your mind on if you really like it or not. I have the spear point style m16 with Veff serrations and I like it a lot. It's too big for me to carry everywhere/all the time though.

Welcome Dandoro...There are as many folding knives out there as there are opinions. A few questions, as noted above, need to be answered before you can make a really good educated choice. I would add that a knife is a very good tool to carry but probably not the first choice for self defense. If this is your first really good folding knife I would recommend Benchmade, Kershaw, or Spyderco in the $50 - 150 price range. Some models to consider are the Benchmade griptillian and mini-griptillian, the Kershaw leek or skyline, and Spyderco's Endura or Delica, or Sage knives. If you can, go by a store that carries knives and get an idea of what feels good in your hands and what features you like. This forum is an excellent resource so scour the threads for reviews and advice. Best of luck!

Sounds like you would probably like some of cold steel's tri ad knives. Check out the spartan, espada or some of their others. Also check out zero tolerance knives, little bit smaller but well worth the money.

I liked this one.

I can't recommend SOG knives.

I think a Cold Steel TI lite would be a better option.

A 5" blade is huge on a folder. Might I suggest something like the Spyderco paramilitary 2, Benchmade Adamas, or Zero Tolerance 350 as more controllable and yet very tough options.
