This July, I'm going to buy myself a small Sebenza. I realize that the new ones have S30V blades, and the older ones have BG42, among other steels. I would like to watch what I spend, and I'm looking at spending no more than 2 Ben Franklins. Consequently, I will be probably getting a used, older one. This knife will be a special carry knife, used but not abused is preferred. This will not see hard use. Probably just sit in my pocket on the weekends when I go out.

Should I bite the bullet and get the more expensive brand new model? For what I will be using it for, is there any difference in BG42 and S30V that this steel apprentice will not recognize? Is saving 50 bucks actually detrimental to me in this purchase? I mainly buy productions that retail under 200, and used does not bother me in the least.

Also going to get, over the next year, a large regular Sebenza, a 7" Green Beret and a Mnandi.

You will have to keep your eyes peeled for a deal like that, they come up but only once or twice a season. Look sharp come may, a lot of people clean house before the Blade show in Atlanta.

Now there is a good tip for me too!!!
Thanks,stjames!!!

it may take a little luck but it can be done.I believe there were a couple yesterday in your range on the for sale forums.one was less than two bills.wish I had got a shot at them myself.

Some people, including me, think that BG42 is a better steel. I'd go with the BG42 steel, it's been said that it's stronger and more chip resistant, it might not hold an edge quite as long as S30V, though.

Given a choice, I wish BG 42 blades could still be ordered.

Good luck finding a Sebbie in the price range you mentioned.

All a second hand Sebbie ever needs is to be disassembled, cleaned, and oiled.

If you keep on the lookout, you can find a new Sebenza for a good price. I got one last year, with double thumbstuds, that was brand new for 210.00. I got one the year before that, with the BG-42 blade for 220.00, with double thumbstuds as well. Both were acquired right before BLADE. Just keep your eyes open and your nose to the ground! ;)

I've never seen a sebbie less than 2 bills. Guess it could happen though. Bet it doesn't stay for sale long.

I know to most people they seem expensive. But consider you can easily carry one for 20 years. Divide the cost out and they really aren't that bad. Has anyone, anywhere ever worn one out?? Short of blatent abuse I am not sure it is possible.

And even than.......,send it back and CRK will probably amaze you!
(or...,so I keep hearing!!!)

I think you should just buy the one you want the first time. pick out the model you want and save for an extra few weeks. Buy what you want the first time .

I agree!!! For my next CRK's, I am ordering a Mnandi and a small Sebbie, with Zulu serrations FROM CRK.

FYI there's a seb on the other forum sitting at $200. It's had some mods done to it but operatioanlly it' s probably fine. (I'm not the seller BTW)

Also I forgot to say that just in the past few months or so I've come to appreciate BG42 more then I used too, unless you must have s30v, I think BG42 is still and excellent choice.
