I want to change the screws on my knives...

I like the Emerson fasteners - phillips and flathead screws.
I'd like to modify a few of my knives so they could be serviceable with a Swiss Army Knife.
Anybody have any decent sources for standard head screws suitable for knife use and abuse?
Anything in particular I should be aware of when shopping for screws?
Should I, perhaps, just go to a decent machining shop - should be a cake (and quick) job for them, eh?

Just hoping someone could point me in a good direction.
Thanks.

Do you know if they are metric or American standard and the size you can order online from places like MSC Industrial Supply, McMaster Carr etc. You can look into places on the web that sell knife kits and parts.
I worked in a machine shop for years and we didn't carry many screws that small. There are different size heads on the same size screws, so if yours are recessed in the handle you could end up with a larger dia. head then the handle will take. Going from a torx head to a slotted might require work to the handle material if it will even accept it. It isn't always straight forward as changing from one type head to another. Any decent machine shop can tell you the size and threads per inch or if metric the size and pitch. You also have to be aware of the length as it could bottom out or be to long and go through the liners of the knife. Are you comfortable with altering the length of these small screws?
Best of luck with changing them out as these are a few thing to be aware of.
It can be done.

I want to do this, too. I'm sick of goddamn torx screws. They seem to strip no matter what.

Amen.

Could anyone enlighten me as to why torx screws seem to be pretty standard for knives?
If they're so spiffy, why aren't they more widely used on firearms? I can't recall ever seeing a torx screw on a firearm, but I never focused on looking for torx screws on firearms. A SAK is all I need for my firearm, it's how I'd like it for my knives.

My guess is that torx screws lower production cost because they are easier to pilot into the hole.

Try putting in 4 tiny flat head screws quickly and it becomes clear why they use a more fragile fastener head for mass production.

Check out knifekits.com.

rpttrsn is correct in that you need to know the exact sizes of the screws you want to replace.

The only time I have ever had a torx screw strip was because I did not know how to loosen loctite.

Try these guys: Oelanders

Fortunately they are local to me. They have just about any type of fastener that you need... and in stainless too. You also don't have to buy a hundred or them at a time. Very reasonable prices too.
