Hi all, new here and just enjoying all the info I'm getting on here. The more I learn, the more interested I become. I have read a bit about all the blade steels available, but I would like to learn more. Like what is the best? I know that is probably subjective, so what are the best characteristics? Obviously i want a knife that will hold an edge, but is harder always better, or does the steel become too difficult to sharpen or too brittle at a certain point? What is a "super steel"? Corrosion resistance is a biggie for me too as I'm at sea a lot. I am genuinely interested and I am also trying to gain some knowledge to base my next knife purchase on.

I know there are a lot of extremely knowledgable people on here and many of you are even professional or hobby level knife makers, so I'm happy to learn what you can share with me.

Short answer is it depends on what properties you need for your application. Then you need to consider geometry. The heat treatment is extremely important.

Basically you want a steel with corrosion resistance, edge stability, and isn't too difficult to sharpen without specialized equipment?
