Hi again :-)

I'd like to cover the bases before trying to learn more about knives, so if any of you knows a nice website (or many) or a cheap book to understand different kinds of steel (or other materials used on blades), different names and kinds of blade shapes, different tipes of grips, their uses, etc.

Let'ss say that if someday I read that "a tanto blade of GIN 1 is better than a spearpoing in AUS 8" to do X, I'd like to understand why :-)

as always, thank you! :)

Read the recent thread by Joe Talmadge, "Steel FAQ draft". It has alot of good information about the different stainless steels used for knives. Some of it may be confusing to a person just beginning to learn about knives, but you can get a general idea of which steels are considered good and which are to be avoided.

The thread only deals with stainless steels, but in general the knife steels you want to avoid are the low end stainless ones. Cheap carbon steels usually give good performance, unless the knives (or swords) are made in India, Pakistan or the Far East. Often knives from those countries are made from recyled steel, which has not been made with the proper methodology or good quality control.

Oops! I told you the wrong thread. The one by Joe Talmadge I had in mind is called "Ranking stainless steels". I haven't read the "Steel FAQ draft" thread, but it should be a good one.

Those are great threads, thanks to all the folks assisting me on this. You make it through both of those threads, you'll know more about steel. But you also asked about blade geometry -- tanto vs spear point, was your example. The Blade Geometry FAQ can be found on:

http://www.bladeforums.com/features/faqs.shtml

There's some other FAQs there as well. I'm re-doing the Sharpening and Blade Geometry FAQs currently, along with the Steel FAQ, but I haven't posted any drafts yet. There will be more good threads coming!
