I want to make a pancake sheath for the knife I am finishing. My question is do you put a welt in a pancake sheath. If so does it go to the edge of the sheath? That would make the belt loop 3 thicknesses. If the welt didn't go to the edge wouldn't there be a ridge between the knife and belt loop. Without a welt won't the knife cut the stitching? Any ideas ? John

You may get different answers than mine, but I say YES, you do have a welt, you do have three layers in the pouch area. I would skive down at the belt slots area and only have two layers for belt slots.

Thank you guys for the responses. I really like the enhanced type sheath, but I want this one to be ambidextrous, so I guess skiving is the answer. Thanks again John

I finally got this done. The stitching on this side is ok but the backside isn't. Thanks for the help. John

I like that sheath. I have use a mountainman style sheath for many years. I would like to see how it looks on your belt if possible. Interesting creation. Would stitching around the belt loops make a difference other than looks?

Here it is on my belt (looks like I need a new belt). I don't thin stitchihg around the belt loops is necessary. It would look better though. It can be used Right or Left or front or back, very versatile. John

Thanks for the reply. Wow. that looks GREAT. Good job! Are you a lefty or will it work on both sides? Have you tried to carry in the small of the back? Your belt looks like an old friend. Nice job. Good design. I have a knife that I have been thinking about a special sheath. I hope you don't mind my copying it for a knife with similar handle. Do you have a pic of the blade handy? Regards

Loosearrow -- Yes I am left handed. I haven't tried it in the small of the back. It will fit fine but I think re-sheathing the knife would be hard. For carrying it in the back I was thinking of wearing it on a chap belt. It will work as well right handed. This is not my original design. I Googled pancake knife sheath and literally found dozens. Thanks I'm glad you like it. Their is a picture of the knife up 3-4 posts. John
