I get the BudK catalog, and I was thinking of ordering a sword. But I'm wondering, which of these blades is the strongest?

Heat Tempered Carbon Steel
440 Stainless Steel

I'm not saying I want to go out and duel, but I don't want a blade that will break is I drop it or something.

Chances are the swords have terrible steel and are not suited for anything other than hanging on a wall.

your best bet is to get a practical Katana by Cas Iberia/Hanwei I own one and they take a good beatin and are fun to use. Or go buy an AK-47 from the Busse company store if either are in your price range. The ones from BudK will not hold up I have broken one and there's a lilttle clip around here of others breaking them. You could probably get an Ebay Hanwei at a reasonable price.

There is significant difference between sword and katana(or busse's wakizashi) isn't it?

(I am not familiar with aforementioned BudK, so if he offers katanas as a swords then I apologize)

Some swords made out of stainless are quite useable... but expect it to be from a custom smith (Barry Dawson for example) running anywhere from 2000 to 5000 dollars (more or less).
A SFI thread: Stainless steel - heat-treatable for flex?
Another SFI thread: Why Stainless Steel is not [necessarily] Crap
For something very tough and semi-traditional (furniture, fittings, construction, etc.) try the ATrim-ASA collaboration: www.atrimasa.com - they also sell Western/European style swords by Gus Trim.
www.chenessinc.com - the very low end - the 9260 blade seems to be a good bet (thru-hardened, there is a new differentially hardened one) - don't expect geometry to be all that great, and the handle construction is suspect (pre-made and hammered on, last I heard - may have changed). GOod customer service. CHECK the handle to see if the core is cracked.
www.oniforge.com - some good stuff, a new company with some pretty good swords and apparently good customer service.
www.j-armory.com - see Furuyama and their own J-Armory line. Both are good stuff, and have direct design input from Bujinkan and other foreign JSA teachers.
www.coldsteel.com - usually a bit overpriced, solid cutters. Handle construction is also iffy - check. QC tends to be okay, depending on retailer.

May I suggest you browse the rest of SFI and feel free to search as much as you wish. I don't think registration is required except to post....

Registration at SwordForums is free and I heartily recommend it. So is registration at NetSword and I recommend that as well. NetSword is a lot less formal in its approach than SFI but it attracts many of the same folks.

You might also want to have a look around www.myarmoury.com as well. They have a ton of very useful information. It's mostly info on European swords, but the info is top-notch.
