I got a sneek peek at Dave Larsens knife with mamoth scales. I had trouble with the image. Purhaps you blokes can help me convince him to post some pics and give some tips on working mamoth Ivory.

So Dave what is the go with working mamoth.
Anyone else feel free to chip in with tips while we wait for Dave to see the thread.

DAVE! Get that picture up there! I can't wait to see it, it's gotta be good. I just ordered some of that stuff. Can't wait to play.
:D

Reg there's a reason I only sent that pic to you guys!

I made a dumb knife with a potentially uncomfortable handle trying to save some of the bark, and a handle heavy knife for the same dumb reason. But I do kinda like the profile and may try it again some time.

There's no trick to working mammoth; thin it from the back, use sharp belts, work when the wife is out of the house ( :D ), realize the color of the bark probably doesn't go very deep.

Overall 8 5/8"
Blade Differentially Hardened O1 3 7/8"

nothing wrong with that Dave :) I like it..
there are many things I do the first time still
I understand:) that is the life of an innovative maker.
tips
if you don't stabilize it ,,
soak it in mineral oil for two days,
two or three times a year
depending on the use it gets.
but I wouldn't do it any less then that..
don't use water to cool it and never get it hotter then you
can hang on to it on the worked side. mostly works like wood.

smells great grinding it too  :) :D

Oh yeah Dave, forgot that one was mammoth ivory. There's nothing wrong with that knife in my opinion. I looks beautiful and there's nothing wrong with a knife that's alittle handle heavy sometimes. There some designs I prefer that way.. It looks good ,another beauty!

Why can't you ool mammoth with water when grinding?

Dave, that's a beautiful knife! Only the maker could try to find fault with a particular knife such as that one. You are just as modest as you are tall, big guy! (And ol' Dave is tall)!

Really nice lines. That is one of my favorite blade shapes. The ivory is gorgeous and very nicely done. The bark is very thin on that one, I can see why you couldnt round it out and grind it off. "God himself" sometimes controls the final contour of his handles.

Absolutely gorgeous Dave...far and away from there "bing anything wrong with it." I love it!

As for working ANY ivory, I use the lips technique ;) I will grind it a little and keep it cool enough that I can touch it to my lips without pulling it away and saying "ouch!" I don't remember where I learned that one, but it works very well for me.

Again, GREAT knife Dave! :D

Thanks for posting Dave, it is a beauty. I think you are a bit over critical. It looks very clean and crisp. The colour of the bark is great.

Hey thanks guys! I'd forgotten about this post, imagine my pleasure seeing it tonight... :D The compliments mean a lot coming from you guys.

Dave
