Hi

I have been a knifemaker as a hobby for years but I would like to try my hand at titanium. Can someone tell me what type to use and where to get it. Also how hard is it ( rockwell ) and do you have to heat treat it or do you just grind and finish?

Thanks in advance

About the only thing I know about it, and I'm hoping someone else will answer too, is that a beta type titanium was used on some specwar community protos a few years ago. You might try looking up SEAL knives and see what you find. You could also try some of the Ti dealers such as Halpern.

You may be able to procure some of the beta type titanium from Mission Knives and Tools out in CA. John Moore is the owner of the company and they make all titanium knives. In the Knives 2001 book they had an article on the company and a little bit about how the grinding is done. Sounds like a bear to work with...maybe you should consider just trying talonite....;)

I do not recommend using 6-4 for blade material. It will get sharp. Every time I get a titanium shipment I get cuts on my hands. But it will not hold an edge.

If you are set on using titanium try to get some of the Beta alloy from Mission. I don't know which alloy they use but I've read good comments about their knives.

Good luck.
