I am planning on getting my first Spyderco knife for work, but I wasn't quite sure on what I should get. So currently I have 4 choices;

Spyderco Pacific Salt
Spyderco Police
Spyderco ParaMilitary
Spyderco Military

This knife would be used for opening boxes, envelopes, cutting cardboard boxes, cutting zip ties, ropes, and probably some cables. Since I am completely knew to the Spyderco brand, I was also wondering what the difference was between the ParaMilitary, and just the Spyderco Military?

I have also seen on some online stores of different versions of the Spyderco Police, and the ParaMilitary. Like the Spyderco Police 3, or the ParaMilitary 2. Are these (I want to say) newer models, and are they better then the first model in some ways, or not?

I also wanted to know if there was some stuff that I should know about the 4 models I mentioned above. For example, I heard some people say the tip for the Spyderco Military was quite "thin", so it may break quite easily.

I see you live in Florida. Are you by the water, often? If so, I'd say get the Pacific Salt. If not, the Paramilitary.

The Para-Military is a slightly scaled down Military.
There are different variations of Spyderco knives. Some may have serrations, different handle material, or might be sprint runs with unique steels. There might be a second version because the Spyderco crew updated it.

there is quite a difference between the first blade and the next three. I would suggest PM2. IMO Military and Police are too big for edc and I'm personally not a fan of pin constructed pivots, which is what the salt has.

Yes Vanguard41xx, my job that I work at is near the water, which happens to be salt water.

If you want plain edge, and aren't around the ocean much, then Military or Para 2 depending on desired length.

For around the ocean or a lighter weight choice, then the serrated Pacific Salt is the way to go. :thumbup:

Police, Police 3, and Pacific Salt all have 3mm thick blades while the Para 2 blade is 3.5 mm, and the Military is 4mm . Police 3 has the longest blade, and probably the thinnest tip. Military and regular Police have fairly fine tips as well. Para 2 and Pacific would be the most robust in that regard, but none of them have fragile tips. Some of the tasks you mention are best handled by a serrated blade and only the Pacific Salt, Police, and Police 3 are available serrated. Pacific Salt has the additional advantage of being totally rust proof and it's also the lightest of those mentioned.

PM 2 gets my vote. It's a great slicer. Would make easy work of cardboard breakdown. If you are worried about tip strength, what about the Native 5? It's smaller so it would ride the pocket with minimal effort. However from your list the PM2 shines for me. By the way, I own both the Native 5 and the PM2. Love them both. I have never broken a Spyderco knife.
