So, some of you know my brother and I from Blade. We're kinda large, loud, standout in a crowd and are pulsing with negativity. We can hold a lot of beer, but can't exactly tolerate it. Unfortunately, in Las Vegas we are light weights compared to even the smallest local. We met up with a friend that had lived for around a year in Texas before moving back to Vegas and her friend. From that point we were up over 30 hours, 15 of those drinking through the night, going to some creepy places, and just missing home at some points. We spent the next day recovering by consuming large amounts of Gatorade and potatoes along with one 10 minute, face down, toilet prayer. As much as I want to joke about it, that lifestyle sucks. The following night, we were asked to go out again and we said HELL NO!! A Busse Blade party till 2 or 3 in the morning is awesome, staying up drinking till noon the next day is just horrible!!
Oh yeah, knives... Anyway, Friday was the start of The Gathering and I was very excited. I looked for Busse Combat, but saw no Busse Combat. I did see big, bad David Brown and BS'd with him for a bit. He is one of the nicest guys in the world, I swear. I didn't recognize anyone else from the Busse circle, but I was only there for Friday. One thing I did like about The Gathering was that it was geared towards collectors and owners over the everyday knife guy. I spoke to Rob Criswell for like 30 minutes straight. He is an awesome guy and reminded me of a clean cut, less crude version of Merle Dixon from The Walking Dead, voice and all. I ordered one of his new Katana's that were waiting on handles, but it is a one off due to the blade size. I also got to talk to Sam Eddleman, Mike Snody and several others. BTW, Mike Snody was so nice, I had to ask him about the CMT trailer that depicted him as a giant a-hole. He admitted that he is an a-hole, but that the reality show is mostly BS and he is VERY pissed about how it came out. I can understand why, there was no way you would think that he was the same person.
And last but not least, how could I forget, Kiku Matsuda!! He is my favorite independent knife maker, period. My brother and I had dinner with Kiku and two of his partners Thursday night. Don't worry, we didn't drink and were very respectful. One of his partners had to translate our conversation as Kiku speaks very little English. We were at a Korean BBQ place (real Korean food and staff), so the whole experience was pretty interesting, but enjoyable. He invited me to visit him in Japan, September of next year and there is no way I am not going!! I need to sharpen up my Japanese language skills of which I have none.
Did anyone else make the show?
