I was dreading this, but

it turned out to be quick and easy. I had dread for the day when my new Sebenza (small reg) would get dull and I had to reprofile the edge. I knew the factory uses a convex edge and I cannot duplicate that. I thought it would take a long time, but no problem.
I use an Edge Pro to reprofile (21 deg, yellow) and a Sharpmaker to refine the edge. Now I have it just as I like it, hair popping sharp.

?? I tried just the Sharpmaker at first and couldn't get it sharp?? (convex edge I guess)

I even have few scratches in the scales now, feels great.

The reason you couldn't get it sharp on the Sharpmaker is because it only works at 15 and 20 degrees, Sebenzas have about a 21 or 22 degree edge when you take into account the convex edge.

It took me a pretty long time to do the same job on the gray stones of the Sharpmaker, as I don't have an Edge Pro.

gull wing, I just got an edgepro myself but haven't taken on my sebbie yet. When you say you sharpened at the 21deg setting doesn't that mean that the edge was actually around 18 deg when finished because of the hollow grind? Also, did you refine the edge on the sharpmaker 20 deg setting? I can see how the 20 deg SM setting would put a microbevel on an 18deg edge but not on a 21 deg edge without a little work.

If you can, please post pics so I can see how the tip turned out (I'm deathly afraid of rounding off the tip) I find myself needing a little inspiration....

I can get my sebes screaming sharp using a sharpmaker with very little effort. That is what CRKs recommends you use.

I've had great luck on the Sharpmaker with my Sebs, and I consider myself a rank amatuer.:o

The Sharpmaker has two angle settings (30 and 40 degrees). Since the Sebenza is factory sharpened at ~20 degrees, do you guys hold the blade off vertical to achieve this angle? I'm interested in a Seb, but have been curious about this issue?

I guess I could have used a Sharpmaker only, but sharpening knives for extended periods of time urk me. I like short sessions, get in get out, patience is not my strong suit. I use the Edge Pro to reprofile and SM to maintain.

The angles baffle me but as I said 21 deg with the EP and 30 deg with the SM. It works and very well. The Hollow Grind of the Seb makes it difficult to know the angle you are getting on your blade.

If you are new with the Edge Pro, practice on several old knives, it takes a while to get the hang of it. You don't want to mess up your Seb. See the photo the tip is just great. (the Sharpmaker is the one to watch on the tip rounding)

With the Sharpmaker, just change the angle a wee bit while you sharpen. You should be able to feel the edge "bite" when you are sharpening correctly.
