i went from a concrete block to a 1500 grit sheet of sandpaper to cardboard. I got the knife to cleany cut paper, and kinda shave. I was very pleased with my work. Now if i could just get some real stones, that would be great.

3m wet/dry lasts for a good amount of time and even longer if you use a surface lube. Its a cheap way to provide proper grit progression and much better than a brick ;)

WD-40 or water, keeps it cutting longer.

Yep, sandpaper on glass, add cutting fluid, WD-40, water etc.

You can use duct tape on the back to provide more tear resistance, it will help you get the paper taut without rips.

I use a stick of white paper glue on the glass. It holds the sandpaper or polishing tapes perfectly, but washes right off with water when finished.
