I was going to say, "Hey, guys, look at this!".

Some guys seem to have done better, but I did ok, I think. $10 for the new sodbuster junior, from the home improvement store [veiled ID hints]; and $5 for the pen knife with no tang stamps and a missing long oval shield, from a nice lady from whom I don't buy much.

Thanks, gents.
Looks like I erred with my veiled ID hints. Thanks for the subtle correction, Mod.

subtle, I ain't, but I get the job done.

You did great, I don't know as much as I should about vintage knives, but for 5 dollars, you couldn't have gone wrong, and 9 dollars for a new sodbuster, is an insane deal, you might could get a Rough Rider for that much, but not a USA Case.

Thanks. The plastic on the little one has an ordinary, sort of toy soldier feel to it, and one blade is a little lazy in its closing snap, but the blades are in good shape and sharp off the shelf.
The sodbuster was a real fluke. I've never been aware of a non-Chinese knife at this place, and suddenly there's a solitary 2001 Case on the sale table.

Good find! I sell enough building materials to that chain to recognize their clearance tags - bought quite a few Case stag handled pocketknives when they discontinued them around 2001. OH

Aha! So this one has been under or behind something for a long time.

I don't think so, your knife has 2011 date marks on the tang; they are a funny company, will put stuff in stock but if they don't get the turns they want on a regional basis they will discontinue stocking the item, even if an individual store does well with it. I have 42 of their stores I service - almost everyone has a few Case knives in stock (Sodbuster Jr., Sodbuster, and some very small synthetic handled lockbacks). Back in the late 1990's they put the rotating, multi-panel, hardware store type Case displays in all the stores around here - I got a lot of deals when the turns didn't reach their standards. OH

Lazy blade on an older cheap knife? Often it is accumulated dried oil, lint, grit or a combination. Try a mineral oil soak, toothpick and q-tip interior rub and then work the blade a few minutes while reading or watching TV. Quite often this turns the trick. What is the tang branding on that one?

They still sell those and few others from CASE at the big blue improvement store here. They also sell SOG (????) for some reason and "Ozark" something or other.

The display is where I see it every time I go there to buy materials. I have NEVER seen them mark down anything with and edge.

Good score!

It's got no tang stamps and a missing oval shield. I have scrubbed it with barkeeper's friend, rinsed it and air blasted and oiled it. It still doesn't snap closed, but it drifts closed ok.

I feel better about missing the 2001 closeout if the branches vary that much. This store only goes back to the late '90s. But don't I have a 2001 tang stamp here, with 4 dots and 5 xs? (The lower line doesn't show with the blade opened straight.)

S. Porch, the Case green Coke bottle jack is a 2000 - note the dot/X pattern on the tang is opposite the pattern on the tang of your knife (a 2011), and that the long tail C is very slender. The black handled Case Texas Jack is a 2010, note that the dot/X pattern matches the pattern on your knife and the C is much thicker. That is how you can tell 2000 decade knives from the 2010. OH

Interesting. And it turns out this one isn't old after all.
