i wanted to ask if anyone here on the forum is involved in the facinating hobby of metal detecting.
i recently took this up again after a break of some 15 years.
to enable me to get some exercise, hence my use of more painkillers.
it is a most interesting hobby and i thought with near a 1000 posters here on hi the chances were that there might be a few ???.
some times you have to clear low lying branches and scrub to enable you to detect some spots and guess what i use.???
you got it my yvsa special. it does a great job.
i have found all sorts of stuff and so have others i know, silver dollars medals gold pieces, lots of americana, as there were a lot of prospectors came over from the usa goldfields to try there luck here in australia. a few of them got very rich on the victorian fields.
people came from all over the world. i wonder if any of them had khuks ???. i know a lot of americans were armed with pistols and bowies. it makes interestin readin. regards ken:)

Spark disabled the avatars in order to decrease bandwidth. They are still there if you click on "Profile". Just not showing up with each and every page. Hopefully they'll make a return...

I was planning to start this one day. I have a few other things I need to do first but then I will try this out as it should be real fun!

yep it is and you get some exercise at the same time, iusualy cant move after for about 2-3 days but its worth it.
everytime u dig an object up it makes u wonder who it belonged to what happened to the guy did he go home rich, did he go home at all ??.
many poor souls lost there lives to natives, accidents, drunken brawls, robberys ect.
and coins are found sometimes very valuable ones, caches of valuables, gold nuggetts, old guns, knives.the list is endless.
the local beaches are a good hunting spot to ,always being topped up with lost rings, watches, gold chains, and then theres the old coins lost over the centuries, and of course modern coins i usualy find 5-20 dollars on a good day. enuff to pay petrol and have a beer afterwards. then the rest goes in a jar till the end of the year. then its counted and jewelry sold ect. it adds up to quite a bundle. as i said i have only just started up again after a fifteen year break. and i allready have about 30 bucks in coin, one 18k heavy gold wedding band which i took down to the jewelers and asked how much it would be to replace if lost. $395 bucks not bad for a mornings detecting 1.5 hrs.
i remember our club was asked to go down to the beach one year to search for a $20,000 dollar rolex watch a guy had dropped in the water. it took 20 odd detecor guys 1 hr to find it, reward collected $500 bucks cash into the club funds. so anyway to sum up its one of the most facinating hobbies i know off,and it pays good in funds and healthy walking. so anyone contemplating takeing it up go ahead you will be getting a lifelong hobby and make many many new buddies along the way.:)

What is the deepest that it will detect? 1 foot 10 feet? I don't think I would want to dig a hole that is 10 feet deep! And how do you know if it is somethink worth digging up?

skagsig it varies from detector to detector, the minelab soveriegn and the explorer xs, will detect coin size objects down to 14 inches plus on the beach, and the modern day detectors are to be seen to be believed. the type i have the minelab, is capable of various types of discrimination, you can set it to find particular objects, say i want to only find $i and $2 dollar coins i wave them across the coil and set the machine to only recognise those and away i go picking up only 1and 2 dollar coins. but generaly you would set the detector to ignore iron ,pulltabs, bottletops, foil, and it will then sound off on coins, and jewelry. only. that is over simplyfying it but that is what these machines are capable of nowadays. usualy you can expect your machine to pay for itself in the first year if you search regularly. and if you are lucky and find a few valuable rings ect like the one i just found ,well the skys the limit.i have seen finds by other members worth thousands of dollars. engagement rings with large diamonds, and precious stones. many many rings and coins are lost every year, and only a small number are recovered so there are always plenty of things to find. my dad who just died recently, took his metal detector everywhere with him when on holiday and he never failed to come home with less than 2 or three rings, and heaps of coins ect. mum has still got some of the nicer ones. as i said it is a hobby that can become quite lucrative. but its like all hobbies it takes time and practice, and luck you still have to walk over that spot where the item is laying on that vast beach.:)

Not into this myself but I recently bought an item from this fellow, who has an incredibly interesting story about metal detecting. Well worth reading.
