The other day I was carrying a Spyderco Native by use of pocket clip. I encountered a person who become scared/enraged at the sight of this knife clipped to my pocket. I tried to explain to them that, being securely shut, and clipped to my pocket, the knife was no more dangerous than their pager. This person responded with, "well my pager isn't going to stab me to death!" I had to walk away, I was speechless. I'm continually amazed at the public fear of knives. Oh well...

My question is how did they immediately recognize it as a knife pocket clip? They must be at least somewhat familiar with, or aware of knives. Sounds like the person was a big idiot!

The person was sitting next to me at the time and they had apparently been studying the knife for a while. I doubt the person knew what it was at first, but a small section of the blade was showing above the pocket, so it wasn't too hard, with a little bit of thought, to figure out that it was a "deadly killing machine."

Hi Soloman,

Almost anything can be a deadly weapon (like a ballpoint pen). A knife is a tool. To consider it as a stabbing devise is quite narrow, prejudicial, and ignorant.

Certain knives, like larger daggers, have very little purpose other than to inflict bodily damage. But to classify all knives as deadly weapons is not fair. They might was well call a multi-tool or my little Kershaw gentleman's knife illegal.

This ignorance is carried by my wife…a public school teacher. She will not carry the SOG Crosscut I gave her to school because it contains a knife (all of two inches long) because of a zero tolerance of knives on school grounds. What about that scissors she has on her desk with the eight inch cutting surface? I'm sure that is less dangerous than that Crosscut of hers!

Can you tell this is a pet-peeve of mine?

Solomon,

that gentlemen sounds like one of the prime reasons that it is illegal for cousins to breed. They would produce more morons like that!!!

For shame, for shame, the needless pain,
their parents must have been insane.
If there's one rule that folks should heed,
it's, "Brother and sister should NEVER breed!"
*A Ken Cook original*

Actually, it's highly depressing how many otherwise "normal" people can be so stupid and cowardly in the presence of an inanimate object.
It's called, "Unreasonable Response" and it is a diagnosable symptom of mental illness.
I believe Jeff Cooper calls them "Hoplophobes."

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

Now wait a minute, this guy has a point. We should eliminate all dangers that cause death.

Look how many people die in motor vehicle accidents, they got to go! Electricity: many folks get killed by it, so it also has to go. Forget making the tobacco companies pay, just totally outlaw tobacco all together. Many people die every year in job related accidents, so if you had no jobs you would spare lives. Get the picture, what else do we need to eliminate?

I think I would had told this guy that next week I was having a scope mounted on my knife, so he should steer clear of tall buildings and fast food restaurants.

A knife is a tool. I have carried multiple blades on my person for several years and have yet to stab someone to death. Just look at how many people died to insure his right to express his opinion. Should we eliminate rights & freedom?

My apologies, my bozo tolerance is low this early in the morning....

It's a well-established fact that pocket clips on knives are a menace to our society and a threat to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. A clear felony, if you ask me.

Did the person who was frightened by your pocket knife think you were his enemy?

No, it won't stab you. It has no internal power source, and it's completely under my control, and I am not your enemy.

The other day at the post office, I noticed there was nobody waiting behind me, so I showed the postal clerk, whom I had seen try to cut packing tape with a ball point pen on another occasion, a William Henry SO7 "International" in black palm. She picked it up very gently, opened the blade about a third of the way, and said "It's scary."

So I said, "You're holding the knife. Are you your enemy? Why is it scary?" I think I just confused her.

Calling them morons won't help. We're battling an ancient cross-cultural prejudice. How many people would cringe and back away if you walked around with your perfectly harmless pet king snake?

I meet a lot of people, including highly intelligent people, people who can think and act independently in many areas including their trades or professions, who have a phobia about knives, and especially about folding knives.

"I can't hande that! I'd cut myself!" - This from somebody who actually can back a car out of a driveway without crunching metal! And, if you wouldn't try to start your car with a knife, why on earth would you open a box with your car keys?

Go figure.

Say this next time:

"If I'm so dangerous, why are you over here making me angry?"

Stop when you get to bone.

I think Ken has hit it right on the head.People like that are suffering from some form of mental defect. Why else would a person accustomed to operating all manner of mechanical device, without incident, during the course of a normal day break down into a gibbering idiot at the sight of a knife? It`s rather sad, really.

I've mentioned this before, but I will again...a lady once told me in no uncertain terms that I was carrying a "deadly weapon." (I was using the scissors on my tiny Victorinox Classic to cut paper). Now this is the most non-threatening, PC knife in the world!

It makes me wish the idiots who have such unreasonable, angry fear of knives would have an emergency requiring my knife to save their lives. And I'd be almost tempted to tell them, as the escalator continues to pull them into its machinery by their pant leg, "Sorry, I wouldn't want my knife to accidentally kill you."

Those who get scared seeing another carries a knife with him, I feel okay with them thinking just they are not familiar with knives. Those who get upset by other's knives, I get cautious. One sees himself through the mirror of the other person.
The guy doesn't stab people around only because he carries no knife with him now. doen't shoot around cuz of no guns.

Everybody has aggressive emotion in mind more or less. The poing is not the amount but the fact if he knows the existense or not.
It's of no help to say this to you dear forumites here, just couldn't resist. Sorry for rumbling.

Or there's the line I hear all the time ... "You could really hurt somebody with that!"

Yes, but why would I want to do that?

Or, as I-forget-who said, "God must love fools, to have created so many of them."

Vent, we must.

It is an interesting phenomenon. Many folks seem to automatically view a knife (any size or shape seems to do) as a weapon and the owner as dangeous. I suspect this is current socialization norms. It wasn't always so. When I was a boy it wasn't seen as odd to have a pocket knife. Now my son seems to view me a eccentric as I carry a knife. Odd that no one seems complain when something needs cutting and I'm the only one able to do the deed. My suggestion, ignor those squemish folks and do what you want because you're not going to change their minds.

PC is getting out of control; and it's making sheeple out of many.

It wasn't that long ago that kids would have pocket knives, fishing poles, go hunting after school and the like. Somehow, this country is losing it's heritage.

Because of increased "bad" in people, implements are regulated as feel-good legislative measures.

I am not that old, but I carried apocket knife to school, squirrel hunted with a 20 ga. and would not have even thought about sassing back to a teacher or policeman.

Today, kids do not have morals, values, or in many cases, active parents. So what do we do, we ban pocket knives and the ten commandments from schools.

I hold no malice against the kids, but rather the parents and sheeple type administrators and in-power types who are more concerned with being PC than being leaders.

Guns, knives, pagers, cell phones, the ten commandments, certain "insignia apparel" and on and on. I guess the masses will not really get it until soemthing "they" have is banned. Ever get hit with one of those offensive pocket watches on one of those wicked chains?

Preach on Nimrod! The sad part is it's true. A year or two ago I was at work and someone needed A pencil sharpened. We were not anywere near A sharpener so I said, here I have A knife, I took out A little folder, under 3" blade, maybe 2.5" and one of the guys say "what are you gonna do kill somebody"? I really wanted to reach under my jacket and pull out my Nealy specialist and say " if I was I would use this"! But, I didn't and it's probably better that way....

They were so afraid of the knife carring man they thought they'd confront them and give them a bunch of crap. "BIG IDIOT" is right!!

That must be a new defense technique against muggers. Annoy them before they pounce:

"Thats not right, thats a knife, thats crazy...are those tight pants? you must be on the pot. Look at him on the pot with a knife! Walking around with a knife. I can't believe it".

I have a switchblade pen. It looks and works like an Italian stiletto. OAL is maybe 3". I opened it at work to sign something, and a coworker, after seeing that it was a pen, said, "Who are you going to kill with that?" With a pen!!
