One stupid question per week.
So, here goes: What is the purpose of the D guard on the bigger Busses that I see? They do not seem to offer too much in the way of knuckle protection (or am I wrong?) Braided 550 cord would protect from abrasion, but from a good old finger smashing?
I ask because last night I split some wood, decided to bring out the FBM and battoned her through one peice (not quite as easy as the splitting axe). In the process I banged up my fingers pretty good.

So, what does it do, exactly (besides look cool)?
Also, is there a tutorial for how to briad them? Can a mechanically mis-inclined individual do so?

Mainly it serves as a lanyard of sorts, increasing retention at the end of the handle when chopping. I like it because unlike a lanyard it is not a loose end dangling back there. I would also serve as knuckle protection for sure. I think I might add one back to a couple of my big knives

Thanks fellas. Mikey, I might have to give that a try.
By the way, I think I stumbled across your website the other night. Are you also a flashlight and watch guy? If so...nice site, great pics...we share many interests.

Not sure which site you're referring to, but I dabble in all those things you mentioned, as any self-respecting obsessive compulsive accumulator would do! I do visit EDC forums and CPF pretty regularly using the same nickname. I also have some photos of my toys on Flickr, including photosets just for my knife, watch, and flashlight interests.

Here's a D Guard I made following KAAK's awesome tutorial:

I think I'll try another one using solomon bars (aka cobra knots) for a beefier guard.

Yup, that Flickr site is the one to which I refer.
I've seen you over on EDC and CPF as well.
Ah, compulsive accumulation...it's not just a job, it's an adventure.

Definately post pics when you do  I have the ashley book of knots, but my dyslexia makes for a challenge to follow the directions. What I like about the tutorial I did (That you followed  ) is that it was shown to me in person and was fairly easy to do. Just took a couple tries to get it as clean as yours mikeymoto

I used the KAAK D-guard insturction to put one on my CGFBM

Very easy to knot one up. I used about 15 feet of cord, but you could get away with less. KAAKs tutorial is fantastic. One change though. In step five you take the tag end and go under the first strand, over the middle, and UNDER the third, not over as he stated. I knew exactly what he meant from his great pics. Make sure that you keep tightening and sliding each successive set of loops up as you go. Good luck.

Great D-Guard and thanks. Got the post corrected now

Yeah this is silly, but I was playing with a wrap on a black skeleton warden tonight so I put on a D Guard made of double solomon bars:

I know, a little overkill for the little warden, but it was fun. I used a core of two strands of camo paracord, then tied a set of solomon bars (aka cobra knots) using lime paracord, then finished it off with a set of blue paracord solomon bars. And it matches my sweatshirt, to boot.
