Talk about bad luck day.. had to chop logs for a bonfire.. all was going well until the axe head flew off of the stick !!!! i tried a makeshift fix, but didn't feel comfortable with it, went and got my collins machete.. very thin tall blade... it turns out that its not the best for trying to go through a 10 inch thick casurina log !!! well, 3 and a half hours later, the logs are chopped, my hands have blisters on top of blisters :grumpy: I didnt even know hands as rough as mine could still get blisters!! My birthday is next month, its time to treat myself to a good khuk.. and maybe a chainsaw for those pesky casurina branches (hardest wood ive come across, well, lignum vitae seems to be harder, but casurina is running a close second)

The good part comes soon though, bunch of friends and family coming over to have a final celebration before a friend of ours moves to Canada.

:)

Seth, buddy, sounds like you owe yourself an HI khuk;)

I feel for you, Seth. Part of the reason that I decided that I want a Khuk is, that a year ago, I was involved in a surveying project that required me and my group to clear a LOT of branches and trees to make line-of-sight pathways. After several weeks of swinging a 24" machete in this capacity, I discovered that:

A) It was too long and heavy.
B) Despite that, it was only good for LIGHT work!
C) It didn't hold an edge worth a dang.

These were just two of the reasons that led me towards the Khukuri; I can't wait to place my order.

Wear gloves and eye protection, guys.
It's not just blisters and sudden head loss (SHL) you should be worried about.
You could get bitten by an ant !

I've got a Casuarina growing in my yard and they can be hard to control, in some places like the Bahamas, have become an invasive pest.

I can understand why as mine sends suckers out into the grassed yard, and these have to be terminated before they get too big to be mowed over.

I have just got two new Khuk's to take on limb control duties and doubt the tree will be able to withstand their onslaught! :D

I encourage you to pick up an H.I. Kukri as soon as possible. My favorite is the M-43, but a Chiruwa Ang Khola will probably serve as well. The Chiruwa has a little less blade heavy forward feel and increases its impact through added weight. The M-43 uses a few trick of physics to increase tip speed giving greater penetration through increased speed. I know that my M-43 outperforms every machete I've ever seen and most axes of greater length and weight.

Be warned however that you won't in all liklihood stop with just one.

ive got my heart set on a ww2 as my first khuk :) but ive also got about 7 others that i want as my 2nd.. ah well, i'll just focus on seeing how customs down here reacts to a blade like that before i place an order for another.

the bonfire was great, apart from cutting open the bottom of my foot on a piece of glass that was half buried in sand.

I live next to a beach and I can't understand why people take glass bottles, especially beer bottles, down onto the beach and lave them behind, or worse, thrown them down and break them as they leave.  :grumpy:

its definately something i wish i could get rid of, this is probably my 4th time getting bad cuts on my feet from glass on the beach, i guess in 22 years of being a beach person it isnt bad, but still.. its something that should never happen

Moved next to 'my' beach in August 1988 and I think it has been only one doctor's visit but several taken out my myself.

Indeed it shouldn't happen but it seems drunks get a buzz breaking things and leaving their mess for others to pick up or worse.

On a more mellow note, 'my' beach at sunrise photographed by a friend (those are clouds out to sea on the horizon) :
