Hello Rich. Very lucky to have a treasure that belonged to a Grandpa.
It looks very much like a Mercator K55K "Black Cat" with a different blade profile, missing bail and coating worn from the handle.
Can you make out what is stamped on the blade tang? ... I can't tell from the picture ... and it looks different from the stamp currently found on a K55K

Hey Brother --- thank you so much .... I think that's the right brand looking at the results in the Web but as you sat the blade is slightly different so don't know if this is a fusion of two halves or a really rare version.

The writing says "Solar" on the tang and besides that and the big cat inscription there are no other markings on it

It looks like it says “SOLAR” on the tang in arched letters. A quick google of “Solar knives” turned up a number of examples of knives made in Seki, Japan, with the same lettering over a rising or setting sun.

The Mercator K55K was extremely popular and inspired a whole bunch of imitations, hence the similarity. I would argue that your knife is way cooler than the original, because anyone can still pick up a Mercator, but who else has an old Japanese knock-off from Gramps?:D

I may be a few years late to the party, but if it helps, RBS stands for Richard’s Brothers & Sons, a Sheffield maker. CC1286 is the VAOS or ‘Vocabulary Of Army Ordnance’ number, the system used by the British Army for close to ninety years until it started to be displaced by NATO Stock Number (NSN) system in 1956.
