I've been teaching firearms at Ft. Huachuca and elsewhere and am going to begin going to border towns. I've been carring a Titanium M-16 lately but am looking at several other knives.
The EESI HEST, The Z T 0300, The CKRT My Tighe,
Would any of these be better than my current carry. For fixed blade I have a well used Randall #1.

The HEST is a great knife. I have one and love it. The ESEE-3MIL would also be a great choice.

How about a Fehrman Peacemaker/Shadow Scout?

For folding knives? ZT's a good choice. Also take a look at the usual suspects from Spyderco (Endura, Para, Military) and Benchmade (710, 940, 950). A KaBar Becker 2 should also be considered.

Or one of the new Chris Reeve Nyala...

Feathers,

I too taught at Ft. Itchy-Scratchy, contraband detection - the Sierra Vista area is cool as heck IMO, especially the sunrises and sunsets (I was wearing my Kartchner Caverns tee shirt today - go there, if you haven't already). And as a Randall guy, it sounds like you've got your fixed blade set-up picked (the #16-7 'Special Fighter', a full-tang #1-7 is a great choice too), but you were asking about a folder...

I worked both sides of the border from San Diego/Tijuana to Brownsville/Matamoros, and can tell you for fact (boring as it may sound), my Spyderco Endura's with a Delica back-up never failed me! I've been carrying these models for 20 years, still do, and while I've lost or given away a few, they're easy to replace, easy to use, and will likely more than satisfy your needs!

Good luck, stay safe!

Shel

p.s. I run the Defensive Pistol matches up here in NW Montana at the Bigfork Gun Club - if you're ever up this way, let me know and you can come shoot with us...

Thanks guys.
Melvin I had a bunch of ICE and Intel guys in the last 2 day class. I just sponsered Mas Ayoob, and Marty Hayes and Kathy Jackson at the sierra Vista range. 12 days of intensive wonderful training. Range Control hates me because they think I am a 'loose cannon' I told one of then that it was a crime that no one in charge of range control or scheduling the training had ever seen combat. But, the new DPTMS is an infantry officer and he and I will look at scheduling classes at Ft. H. Now we have moved the training to a couple of local ranches and the Sierra Vista range.
I love my Randall and might get another, or one of Josh Randall's knives. For folder I went to the P X and got a SOG Flash II for 50 bucks. I'll look at others also but I may just carry my Titanium CRKT. I like blades and the P X sometimes gets some good deals. Remember the days of 21 buck Gerber Mark II's :-)

Have to agree, got both HESTs and haven't managed to screw either up yet. Luck to you out here. Have two BP marked Enduras, and they have served well also.

Melvin, I'm going to send two of my guys and/or myself up to train with Marty Hayes at FAS. Not far from you. I have to go to Berlin to be in a documentary so I have t see how much the T V folks will pay before I can commit numbers to Marty.

3feathers,have you gone to 'Trapper Jon's Knives' on 175 E Fry Blvd
in Sierra Vista?? He has a huge stock of Knives and an imense
amount of knowledge. Plus if he doesn't have it he can get it for you.

Personally i think the best knife for the situation your describing is an Emerson, the wave feature is THE fastest way to deploy a knife and there is model for everyone. just my .02 cents but if i was going to be relying on a folding knife as a possible defensive i wouldnt choose any other knife.

Yes, I got a really nice Gerber MK 2 from John a couple of years ago. I usually see what the P X has as I'm a cheapscate. I will look at John next week, but we had a meeting with a bunch of 12th and 19th Group retirees and most of us are actually carrying the M-16 versions. Two had the M-21 S F with handguards and I like it. I did get the SOG Flash II at the P X.
I actually have two Randall Number Ones and they are my serious knives. I just want a good folder on my plate carrier.
