I really like the BK-7. Well balanced with a nice pointy point, I think it is pretty hard to argue with. But I will.
My understanding is that the BK-7 was designed to replace the venerable KA-BAR USMC fighting knife. This would seem to be a mighty big task, but if any knife has come close, I'd say the BK-7 would be a contender. However, both the USMC fighter and the BK-7 seem a bit longer than needed for modern warfare, and too big for easy carry by current forces. There isn't much space on current body armor for a knife with an OAL of 13". And riding in cramped HMMWVs or MRAPs doesn't favor belt wear either; there just isn't much space. Even riding in Helicopters, a big belt knife can get in the way when climbing in or getting out. I found the easiest way to carry a knife is on a vest or body armor, and a length of 5 to 5.5" works very well.
So I'd like to see a 5.5" version of the BK-7. Could we call it the BK-5.5? Or perhaps the BK-21...a knife for the 21st century soldier?
Thoughts?
