I would like to discuss an H1 Military "salt" knife

I want to have a real discussion about this knife. If something like this were made available, I would buy two of them immediately! I was hoping to hear some input and have a serious discussion about whether something like this is feasible. I have participated in a few threads lately where the idea was played with, but I really believe this is the kind of knife that would have a fanatical following. My idea is to have the military design (or even better military 2 with 4-way clip). I guess it could have a g10 handle if the hardware was h1 or titanium? I understand that spyderco is not doing ffg with h1, but I would definitely accept a blade with whatever grind was necessary to accommodate h1! From a fisher and point of view I would strongly suggest a combo edge. I have both pe and se in h1 and while I understand the inherent benefits of se in h1, I believe that a boat/ocean knife needs some plain edge too. For example, I always use my dfly instead of my se pacific salt for cutting bait. Those serrations are good for lots of cutting tasks, but a pe works way better on slimy squid and other soft bait. If not a combo edge then at least a 3/4 serrated with at least a full inch of pe at the end.

Ok, that's my idea. I would love to hear others opinion on this knife. Maybe Sal will chime in and give a clue as to whether this could actually happen. Hell, I'd be willing to listen to a quote for having one custom made! I believe there is absolutely a market for this knife and I also know that nobody is going to step up and make it besides spyderco. Let's see where this thread goes...sometimes enough small voices can move mountains. ;).

Well a big problem for this knife to happen is that the h1 is in japan and the military in colorado, and from my understanding neither of those points are going to change. However I too would like to see this knife or something similar. All the H1 knives available, the folders atleast, are not as hard use ready as a design such as the military. I am also not overly fond of FRN, though I should say I just prefer the other spydie handle types better since I still have a few FRN handled knives. I would like a more sturdy folder in H1, and the military sounds like an awesome platform for it.

I would love an H-1 Salt version of the C-36 Military model. However I have 2 conditions I would like to make for it>> first of all I would want it to be available in full Spyderedge as well as plain edge and also in combo edge as well. Because an H-1 Military should be made for all kinds of cutting jobs in harsh environments.

Second I would like it to be also available in a solid yellow G-10 handle. I would buy a PE and a full SE both.

Under those conditions I would be all for it. Because with H-1 being the best blade steel for full serrations/Spyderedge to me it would be totally counter-productive not to make it available in full SE.

I would also love it if it came in a really nice cordura or nylon belt sheath as well.

How about an H1 Catcherman? If you don't like FRN then custom scales can be made of whatever you prefer.

I don't think the foundry that makes H1 steel would ship it to the US. A full flat grind would probably be unavailable as well.

I think an H1 Police 3 might be more feasible. Give it a solid G-10 scale on one side and a liner on the other like the Civilian to save on weight and cost. Saber ground like the older Police model. Fully serrated, of course.

Pardon my ignorance, but why?

Unless they can make the mating surface of the H1 blade tang harder/more wear resistant, the locking liner may cause it to wear much faster. Although H1 can be hard at the (especially serrated) edge, the rest of the blade is relatively soft compared to some other steels. At least that would be my guess. Otherwise, I'd be all for an H1 Military.

As much as I love the Military, I don't really see what an H1 model could do better than a Pacific Salt.

Pardon my ignorance, but why?

I don't know, what can a military do better than an endura? Same argument. Isn't there room for both of them to exist??

Nice idea.

This has been brought up quite a bit and I believe Sal has said it isn't going to happen. As has been mentioned the Military is a Colorado model and H1 is a Japanese steel. Also H1 has to be hollow ground and the current Military is flat ground and I believe every Salt model to date is a lock back. If that is the case there is probably a reason why only that lock is used. If you made all the changes necessary for a Salt model it would be a different knife.

Great idea surfingringo how about a yellow g10 h1 military?

Or a yellow g10 paramilitary2 in h1

You're late to the party Sir!! They did have a Sprint run of an H-1 Catcherman with a green FRN handle. I have 2 of them and it is a great user blade. I just wish that they would have made some of them in full Spyderedge.

As far as the Military being compared to the Endura I do believe that the Military is much more ridgid than the Endura and the handle grip fits my hand much better. The full flat grind can't be done in H-1 from what I've been told so that alone would probably kill the idea.

Personally my most wanted blade in H-1 would be the original Temperance 1 fixed blade model. I think an H-1 Temperance in PE & SE would truly be a super outdoor/survival type blade.. However there are a lot of main line Spyders I would like to see them do an H-1 Salt edition for.

You could just use another very corrosion resistant steel like N680. That can be FFG and it's extremely rust resistant.

There's a much better chance of spyderco making a new knife in Japan of similar specs, then to actually make an H1 military, very cool idea though

Yup.. it's no coincidence that all H1 models are variants from models made in Seki City. I'd LOVE a Centofante 3 in H1 and FRN handle.

I like this idea too.
