Hi Folks well it has been a few months since I posted the knife Mark made with my damascus, and since then Mark has been making his own damascus at studio4 and lots of crazy cool chef knives. it is a real pleasure to watch Mark as he works and explores the world of custom chef knives. In the short time Mark has been making knives he has shown the ability to innovate on a level that is very impressive, we have become good friends and he has helped me grow in my own knife making. the sharing of info has flowed freely between us and I would think that the influence we have on each other is clear to see in our work. Mark is at the beginning of a long and wonderful career in knife making I am honored to have played a part in helping launch his knife making career and I am going to miss having him around to bounce ideas off of. I will let Mark tell you more about that he has joined our family here on BF with a membership so lets hope he sees this and shows us some pics of what he has been up to.

Hi everybody,

Thank you Dave for that wonderful introduction, and your amazingly humbling words. It has been a wild ride for me so far in making the transition from working in a bakery to working as a full-time bladesmith and custom knifemaker.

I've been making knives for 4 years now. It was through a series of fortunate that I was first brought into the fold of this world that is custom knifemaking. Bob Kramer is the man who first offered me the incredible opportunity to come into his shop and learn the skills of the trade. For three years I worked and learned what it takes to build high quality knives. Almost everything I know about knifemaking I owe to Bob, and for sharing his trade, his friendship and for being and incredible mentor, I am forever indebted.

It was in my time working for Bob that I first met Mr. Dave Lisch at Gary House's hammer-in. For any of you whom have had the esteemed opportunity of meeting and getting to know Dave, you will understand when I say that he has the spunk and energy that belongs to a teenager. I thanks Dave for his gregarious personality, and his dedication to creating a strong sense of community through friendships, business and teaching, because without it I wouldn't have been able to be doing this work full-time. I feel so fortunate and flattered that Dave saw the prospect of me working in his school as a great opportunity for himself just as much as it has been for me. Dave is one of the most skilled and creative makers I've ever had to pleasure of knowing and the fortune to call my friend. In working and learning from Dave, my knifemaking has jumped so many levels, not to mention the fact that I am now confident in calling myself a bladesmith thanks to the techniques I've learned from Dave.

Here are some photos and links to my work that I'd like to share.

This a petty with a hexagon shaped handle.

Thank you all for taking the time to check out a new maker. I appreciate any and all questions and comments you have.

Best regards,

Mareko Maumasi

Mark,

This looks like very nice work, by any measure.

While Dave's influence is clear, you've got your own thing going on here.

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Seth

Mark thank you. Seth you are right Mark very much has his own thing going on and I believe we will all get a chance to see just how big it is in the coming years

Exquisite work. You have done much in your short time working the medium. You honor your mentor through your work.
Keep it hot.

Thank you every body for your support! It's incredibly reassuring to read such positive feedback. I love this work and nothing else I'd rather do in this world. If any of you are planning on making it up for the Seattle Int' Knife Show you should definitely stop by my table it'd be great to meet any and all of you in person. At the pre-funk at Dave's shop I'll be doing a some cutting demos, so if you're interested in honing your knife skills come by and ask any questions you might have.

Here are some videos of my doing cut tests:

Just met Mareko today at Lisch's shop and talked kitchen knives, watched him do some quite skillful onion dicing etc. A real cool guy, and his knife was really cutting well...
