Hello,
I was lucky enough to be the first to own and test the new Mod 7 Combat knife. This knife was crafted by Dennis Phillips of Independence Custom Cutlery. This particular blade was ground from 440C and and has been heat treated as well as cryo treated from I believe D'Holder a good friend of Paul Bos.
So I have confidence it was done right as well as being state of the art. The blade is flat ground and about 8 inches long and 1 3/4 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. The gaurd and pommel are hand crafted form 416SS. The pommel is capable of heavy hammering.
The slabs are canvas micarta with a heavy blasted finnish. The entire knife has been bead blasted but on request Dennis will send any knife he has made to be coated with Birdsongs famous Black T.
After I got the knife I had to take some photos of it with some of my gear( I have no idea how to post pictures so I requested Dennis post a picture that I sent to him, he is alot more computer inclined than me) then it was out to the field. The first thing I did was chop into a pressure treated 4x4, very knotted up and seasoned. No problem, even with direct chops going into the knots. One thing I expected was there might have been some dings in the edge, there was no damage to the edge at all. This is not the type of knife one would want to split large chunks of hardwood but it could be done,I believe without damage. I then constructed a (hasty) surveillance hide with shrubs, small trees and weeds. This was no challenge of course, this is a task that could be acomplished with any larger knife but the grip on this particular knife made it a joy to work with. No hot spots at all, very comfortable and plenty of traction. I am very pleased to be the first one to test as well as own the new model 7 from ICC. It is everything I would want in a survival/combat blade. I again would encourage anyone that needs a no nonsense combat/survival knife to consider ICC for all your needs. If he does not have what you like as far as design he will build it, whatever you want. Dennis is also going to be donating knives to SF/SEALS for this up and coming conflict. He is also a true AMERICAN.
( my spelling sucks while typing so bare with me )
