For inspiration I searched the internet to find a full hand made ice axe and I have not found one.
So, this is the one I made from scratch.
I used a combination of drop forge full body axe/hammer to forge the head

After some grinding

In the end it came out this

Has a length of 25,5 inch and weighs 30 oz. The shaft is made of acacia wood and the fittings are made of stainless steel.
I hope you like it.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Just thinking how much I could have used that this past week or two. You did an amazing job-looks great!

You sure did a nice job on your ice axe. The workmanship is first rate.

Here's what I thought of when you said ice axe. This one was used in the harvesting of ice. A little different than yours.

Thanks!

I now that tool but mine has another history.
It is known by the french name ”piolet” translated in the english ”ice axe”, even if it refers to the tool that you mentioned.

Nice axe. Seems a little short for a traditional climber's ice axe. What's the length of the head (pick to aze)?

Thanks, the lenght is 8,6 inch.
As you can see is a combination of a traditional ice axe (steel and wood construction) and a modern one (the head and shaft are smaller).
I have a height of 6 foot and the ax tip reaches my ankle, which is good for me.

Most impressive!

You are a real pro!

that is awesome, i have been trying to find a ice axe i want to buy but i might have to copy yours.

Nice one! I hope you will show some pics while you use it.

The shape reminded me a bit to this "thing" I made for other purposes:

Very nice. I've been scouring the internet looking for an ice axe with a hatchet blade instead of an adze, no luck so far...
My reasoning is that I don't use the adze for that much really, but I carry a small hatchet for fire making & if I could get one tool that does both jobs it'd save a bit of weight.
