Hey guys. Wondering if I can use the ice fishing rod I got this Christmas as a panfish rod. It's perfect size. I'm more than familiar with fishing, but brand new to ice fishing gear. Don't know of the rod is meant for more horizontal fishing or built for a more vertical pull/fishing. Much different than my shimano/st croix baitcaster setup lol

Do you mean using it during the non-iced up fishing season? Maybe your lakes never really ice over. Yes, you can fish with an ice fishing rod in the summer but you can't do much casting so fishing off a dock or boat you can drop line with one but I don't understand why you would do that versus use a regular rod for panfish. Use a medium or light action 5-6 foot rod or a cane pole and you have many more options for fishing close or further out. Decent panfish rods can be found for $20...spend more if you like more features but really for sunnies, bluegills, perch and crappies you would have a hard time wearing out a standard closed face spinning rod/reel combo.

I fish basically bass year round. Know a few places where ill take my friends sons for sunfish, so if I could get away with it, using this 25" rod for a 4 foot cast would be mint. Must feel like fighting a shark haha. I fish 50lb braid on some nice setups, so an ultra light 25" rod sounds like tons of fun.

I used to fish trout with my ice rod, in small creeks when I was a kid and it worked wonderful. I also took one on a hitchhikin trip; it paid off as I had little money. The trout I caught was five star.

You can absolutely use an ice rod on open water. There is a perch lake here where I use my ice rod year round because the large perch school up under the boat, out of reach from a longer rod. I get laughed at when people see my tiny fishing rod but quickly shut up when I'm catching football perch and they only get tiny fingerlings. With some practice you can cast 15' for so with a 1/16oz jig head.

I'll admit to not exactly knowing what an ice fishing rod looks like.... but I tell ya, I just slay the fish when I fish with my daughter's BARBIE POLE! I have caught more fish on them than anything else.
