Icy River Hike.

A few photos from an early morning hike along the river.

When moving through the winter landscape,

…frozen bodies of water are very temping as easy routes of travel,

…but much care must be taken, …for they can be deadly traps.

I often hike alone or with my dogs, and alone the consequences of breaking through the ice are often fatal.

Another factor for me is that most of frozen water I hike around is mostly flowing river water,

…even the lakes near me are just dammed up river sections that still have the dangers of currents weakening ice.

Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security on ice,

…ice that is safe one day may not be the next,

…and the next section of ice you cross might not be as strong as the last.

Few traps exist in the wilderness that are as dangerous as the icy shield over flowing water.

Great pictures!! Thanks for posting that. Down here it never gets cold enough to freeze moving water.

Those pictures of ice look absolutely stunning! Thanks for sharing. I was out walking on a pond a few hours ago, and when I took a step to get off and looked back I saw a crack that I didn't when I was on it.

Also be cautious of walking over a spring. The warmer water welling up will cause the ice above it to be very thin.

Mike, it looks like you had a great time out on your hike. What you said, is so true about crossing on the ice. Like you I hike most of the time by myself. I really stay clear of trying to cross any ice if at all possible.
